Who would prevail and why?

Now that the Mayweather v. Cotto fight is in the history books,
the fans look forward to the ultimate fight between Mayweather v. Pacquiao.
This fight could come later on in the year after many details have been
ironed out. The details include the fight purse, the venue, the
calendar and the fight card. Fight fans weigh in on both sides.

Proponents of Floyd Mayweather argue that he has a skilled
defense in the ring as evidenced by the performance against
Miguel Cotto. Pacquiao fans would argue that Cotto penetrated
Mayweather's defense to bloody the champ throughout the recent
fight with Cotto. Floyd Mayweather has a 5 inch reach advantage at
72 inches over 67 inches for Manny Pacquiao and an inch and a
half height advantage.

The fight could turn against Mayweather if Pacquiao fights
on the inside with a barrage of punches aimed at gaining an
early lead on the judges' fight cards. The likelihood of a TKO
in this fight is lower because both fighters are skilled ring
technicians. Despite getting hit by Miguel Cotto,
Floyd showed a lot of skill fending off numerous punches
while on the ropes.

The age factor favors Manny Pacquiao in the same way
as it did with Miguel Cotto. There is a slight difference
in age between Manny and Floyd. As Floyd pushes toward age
40 , the age difference becomes more of a factor.

Pacquiao has won 10 world crowns in 8 weight classes; whereas,
Floyd cannot claim that same level of diversity in fighting
people of different weights. Both fighters have a skilled
defense in the ring, although Manny Pacquiao probably
throws more punches quantitatively.

To prevail in a possible upcoming fight against Pacquiao,
Floyd Mayweather must have a considerable running regimen
and sparring practice in his own weight class and lower weight
classes. Sparring in the lower weight classes would force Floyd
to move faster and develop skills in throwing more punches with greater
accuracy.  In addition, Floyd must not fight as much on the
ropes because judges can't see where and how punches land.

Manny Pacquiao has a considerable training regimen in place
already. He moves quickly in the ring and throws many effective
punches. Both men can finish 12 rounds without too much trouble.

Manny Pacquiao could win if he succeeds in penetrating the
defense of Floyd Mayweather in the same way as Miguel Cotto
did in the most recent fight. A Mayweather win could happen
if he puts up an effective defense and throws more effective punches
than in the fight against Miguel Cotto. Time will provide fight fans
with the answer. Meanwhile, Manny Pacquiao must beat Bradley
for a bigger purse day against Mayweather. The next fight for
Manny will be no small task despite the fact that he is favored
to win based upon experience in the ring.

Thanks for the comments. The stakes are high. Pacman must get through Bradley before he can put on gloves against Mayweather. Pacman could throw more punches against Mayweather and herein lies the problem. Mayweather needs a more rigorous workout consisting of more running and sparring with fighters in the lower weight divisions to challenge him sufficiently to push back the barrage of punches coming from Pacman.

eh. there is more to this than skill--money plays an important factor why the fight may never happen.

Plus--there is the issue with who and what owns the venue and boxing PPV slots--they are owned by HBO and Golden Boy productions. Dela Hoya made almost $ 300 million with his loss to Manny, and continues to make money out of Manny because of his status as a Pinoy hero. Mayweather may be greedy, but he is far from afraid of Manny. He just wants a cut.

I will be going for Paquiao all the way man, can't stand Mayweather.

imho they have both become whiners because of this fight. But I see why, since they both have a lot to lose.
May 20, 2012
The fight will happen if the fans want it to proceed.

perhaps. it is all about the money. Mayweather likes promoting his own fights and this means more $$ for him.

Perhaps. He still must perform in the ring.

Over the last couple of years I have seen Mayweather pull some of the cheapest tactics ever to win fights (worse than Richard Steele calling a knockout with a few seconds left in a championship fight) and has let money get in the way with fighting Pacquiao. I have been watching boxing since Ali came back to fight Jerry Quarry and Pacquiao is probably the fiercest fighter I have every seen.    Someone like Mayweather, who is nearing retiriement with a perfect record, who doesn't …
