I went to this designer suit outlet in Manhattan, New York to buy a suit that I would have to wear once in awhile to events. I actually found the outlet by accident, taking a stroll on 5th Avenue with my girlfriend on vacation. It just so happened that I needed a suit, so we went in. The man outside passing flyers said that the outlet offered cheap designer suits, shirts and shoes. They advertised 40% off of the normal cost. I went in not really knowing what kind of suit I wanted or what kind of material I was interested in. I rarely wear a suit and have never ever bought a suit for myself. Don't get me wrong, I do have suits. But they are my dads from the 70's. My girlfriend said I needed a suit, and me being the sucker that I am, allowed her to wrangle me into the suit outlet.
Because I did not know what I exactly wanted, we went to an outlet that had a wide range with more versatility than your average department store. The sales person (Tarek) that helped us first asked us what we were into. I thought to myself, I like ice cream. But suits, I have no idea! He told us that it was best to try a bunch of different styles and types to see what I liked. Tarek brought out a lot of different styles for us to look at, including plaids (just not what I like), windowpanes, pinstripes (just not what my girlfriend is into), and solids.
Even though I tried a bunch of suits, the one I ultimately picked and bought was a classic black Michael Kors suit. The suit is formal, and black. Tarek said it was an “essential piece for any man’s wardrobe”. Who am I to argue with him over that! I just thought it was very comfortable and that it made me look good. I am pretty tall (6”1’) so the jacket sleeves did not need to be shortened. If we had needed tailoring though, they had a guy on hand that made alterations in person, but you do not have to use him.
We also found this kicking Ralph Lauren sude dinner jacket. I ended up buying that one also.
The outlet was good in general though because they had authentic designer suits for reasonable prices too. I did not feel like I was getting hustled at all. Tarek person did not work on commission (we asked) and he was not pushy at all. He also was not judgmental when I told him I did not know much about suits or what I wanted. He was very helpful and actually educational. Overall, there was a great selection of everything and that the sales person was not just looking out for his own interest more than mine. Tarek was actually really quite comical and good natured.
