NANA is my favorite anime/manga series hands down. The storyline follows two girls both named Nana. Nana Komatsu is a 20 year serial dater who always ends up in a cloud of drama surrounding her. Nana Osaki is a punk rocker with a mysterious past. Both girls meet on the same train going to Tokyo. Instantly they have this bond finding out they are the same age with the same name. Unfortunately, the girls friendship didn't last as the punk rocker left without saying bye. Coincidently, when Nana Komatsu (nicknamed Hachi) was scoping out apartments to live on her own at, she bumped into Nana Osaki at one of the open houses. The girls decided that they would share the apartment as roommates for the rent would be halved. This compromise between the two girls started a spiral of drama, love, and a strong friendship.
The reason why I love this series so much is because all the characters created all have a strong background and purpose for the story. Another element that revolves around this series is the music. There are two real life musicians that play the part of both bands of the series. Nana Osaki's Black Stones and Reira's Trapnest are portrayed by Tsuchiya Anna and Olivia Lufkin who sing and create the music played. Nana's Black Stones band is more of the punk rocker'ish sound as Reira's Trapnest is more melodically beautiful.
There is a lot that happens in the series. Every episode (or chapter) always has something new and shocking to keep watchers and fans entertained. Most guys will be turned off at first, but I know some guys who absolutely love NANA.
There has been two live action films, a manga series, an animated series, as well as novels, and a ton of other merchandise following NANA. It's a great series to become a fan to.
