The Best Excuse for Women to Get Together.

When do women usually gather? Birthdays? Bridal showers? Bachelorette parties? Baby showers? That's nice, but it's usually focused on one woman and makes the rest of the women wonder when they'll hit those milestones or long for back when they did. In other words, it's not really fun for everyone.

But Naked Ladies Parties are fun for everyone! Everyone gets to feel good about cleaning out their stuff a little, giving to a good cause and getting a few new treasures without spending money. It is, for lack of a better word, FABULOUS.

It's also a great way to bring together women from different circles of friends. The joy of getting a great new used pair of designer jeans that fit is universal. And it's also nice to have supportive people surrounding you as you explain that this was your lucky skirt (in the late '90s) or you're getting rid of these pants because you dropped a size after you started dance classes or that a particular shirt needs to go because it has bad ex-boyfriend karma.

I find the best parties have 8-10 women. I usually serve some munchies, and my guests often contribute to the snack pile.

Give it a try. Almost every first timer at a Naked Ladies Party says it was more fun than she expected.

Like the name, for what that's worth.

Thank you for telling me what this is, and for highlighting a good concept with a clever name.

This sounds like much more fun than hauling your clothes off to Buffalo Exchange!

Great idea. I've blogged before about cleaning out closets and donating or giving away your clothes. Having a party to do just that is really cool. Reducing waste is a good thing.

Phew, this is so much more wholesome than the name suggests :P  This sounds like a ton of fun and so much better than going to a thrift store for "new" fashions.  Thanks for sharing! :)

That is a great idea! I have a pile of clothes waiting for me to bring it to a consignment store, don't know when I would get around to it. I've never heard of this concept, thanks for introducing me to it! I've heard of cloth diaper and toy swap parties before but not women's clothing.

About this topic

The exact format of naked ladies parties varies greatly, but the general concept is that women clean out their closets and dressers, bring things they no longer want or need to a designated location and make them available to other women who may want them. All unclaimed items at the end of the event can be donated to charity.

Format Options:

1) Free for All -- Women bring their discards and dump (or display) them in a central area. All women grab things they want on a first-come, first-takes basis.
-- Pros: You can invite as many women as you have space for with this approach. It's efficient. It allows women to come and go open house-style if they choose.
-- Cons: It's a bit anti-social and competitive. Also, clothes you were wearing to the party may get taken by someone else when you're trying something else on.

2) Item by Item -- Each woman takes a turn at the front of the group. She presents each item that she brought one by one. She can share pertinent information such as size, brand and whether there are any stains or holes. Any woman in the audience can call out if she's interested in the item. She can just take it or try it on. If she tries it on and doesn't want to keep it, someone else can try it. Items that no one claims form a pile.
Pros: It's more social, allows for a formal farewell to items that you're particularly attached to, and because everyone's attention isn't totally divided in self interest, women can observe what others are ...
