A Great Everyday Shoe...

While I enjoy variety in some aspects of my life, there are others where I vastly prefer consistency. Choice of shoes is one such area. I am aware that other people enjoy wearing different shoes and use footwear as an expression of fashion and style and I can appreciate that. For me though, once I make a shoe selection I will stick with that selection until I am convinced that another, superior product comes along.

Benefits of this mindset:

I spend zero time figuring out which pair of shoes to wear.
I spend zero time figuring out which pair of shoes to buy when I need a new pair.
I can order new pairs via the internet and I know that they will fit when they arrive.

This brings me to my current choice for a casual everyday shoe, the New Balance 790. I am fortunate to work in a casual dress office, so 90% of the time my choice in footwear is not limited to dress shoes. For years I was wearing the Puma Anjans and had gone through several pairs. That all changed when I took a trip to the New Balance store with my father in law who has been a New Balance devotee for many years. Once I tried on the 790's I was hooked.

Features/Comfort:
The shoes are extremely lightweight  despite the fact that they have a thick cushion. New Balance describes them as a trail racing shoe. I do not do much "trail racing" but they are super comfortable for walking and wearing all day. I would say the support is excellent. The sole provides great traction (perhaps because they were designed for trails) and they offer excellent grippage even on wet slippery surfaces (our parking garage was wet this morning due to the rain).

Appearance:
They come in two colors 1) brown with orange and white trim;  and 2) black with white trim. I have gone through both and currently prefer the brown. I uploaded a picture of both shoes and for a more detailed view; you can follow this link to the New Balance website. http://www.newbalance.com/outdoor/trail/MR790/
I do not pretend to be a stylish dresser, so I will let the community provide the ultimate judgment on their aesthetic value, however I think they look good enough.

Durability:
They last for a long time however after about 10 months of continuous wear they cushioning seems to get a bit less cushiony. Also, the brown shoes seem to collect a bit more dirt than the black. I generally replace the pair I am wearing because of the appearance and not the comfort. I am on my third pair (started with brown, tried a black pair, then back to brown) and I have a one pair in reserve in case they cancel the model.

Current cost is $79.99 through the New Balance web store, but if this is your first pair, I would recommend visiting a store to check the sizing.

New Balance makes great shoes. I've been using them for walking and running for a long time, and find them very consistent in quality and fit.
