No retreat, full surrender

  • Jan 19, 2014
Kyle Idleman is a pastor at a very large church in Kentucky.  I am always suspicious of churches of this size, expecting that they must be softening the message of the Bible to attract big numbers.  But if he is preaching what he writes my suspicion is misguided.

The message of this book, as is the message of Jesus, is that he seeks not fans, but followers.  The difference is captured by the phrase Idleman quotes from 19th century missionary William Borden:  "No Reserves, No Retreats, No Regrets.".  He uses examples from Jesus's ministry where he calls for followers but the recipients of the call find reasons not to accept:  family, money, fear, culture.  We still offer the same reasons (excuses?) today.

He is not making a play for salvation by works, he emphasizes.  In fact, he says that attempting to earn salvation is a fan behavior:  "The keyword for fear and guilt is "do" . . . The keyword for grace is "done.":  "Fans are all about the "do," but followers celebrate the "done."  Rather, following should follow from our awareness of the immense measure of unmerited grace that Jesus's plan for salvation represents.  Idleman quotes James on the proof of grace by dedicated following of Jesus as Lord (literally master to the follower's slave).

The message is convicting,  told with simple words, good examples, and frequent humor.  Idleman knows the message and his audience.
