I met a friend for drinks after work. I could tell that something was bothering her. Before she ordered her usual long island ice tea, she began talking about a situation at work and the tone she used was filled with frustration. The one way conversation lasted for 10 long minutes. When she stopped talking and took in a deep breath our drinks had arrived and she took a sip and I asked calmly, “so why is she still working for the company?
My friend look at me puzzled and then said I don’t know why. I shared with my friend that On Board Terrorist (OBT) are chronic complainers, they know everyone’s problem and have the perfect solution, and they are extremely focused on earning a promotion without putting in the hard work or making certain their personal agenda is played out.
I’ve found the best way to address them is in a one on one setting clearly stating that their behavior is not okay and declines the morale of the office. My friend sat quietly and then shared, “in the beginning hearing the gossip was interesting, but then it became frequent and she began using the information to get people in trouble, and now it’s so distracting because we are always wondering what did she say now and who will be written up or seen different by management because of what she said
