"Eric Holder is most certainly the most liberal attorney general of the modern era, but he has also liberally bent the rule of law and established internal practices that harm the cause of justice. His tenure at the Justice Department has been marked by one scandal after another and abusive behavior by Justice Department lawyers in unwarranted, ideologically driven prosecutions." -- page 21
I was wondering when someone would finally write this book. It has been quite apparent to many observers from the earliest days of the Obama administration that something was clearly amiss at the Department of Justice. The appointment of Eric Holder as Attorney General of the United States sent up all sorts of red flags to decent, law-abiding citizens. It turns out that our fears were well founded. John Fund and Hans von Spakovsky (a former counsel to the assistant attorney general for civil rights in the Justice Department) have joined forces to document the long list of abuses of power, outright lies and high crimes and misdemeanors in their explosive new book "Obama's Enforcer: Eric Holder's Justice Department". This shocking expose makes it abundantly clear that this attorney general has precious little regard for due process, the rule of law, free speech, common sense or the U.S. Constitution. What is even more troubling is that Mr. Holder enjoys the full support of the President of the United States.
As Fund and von Spakovsky point out Eric Holder was certainly not an unknown quantity when he assumed the role of attorney general in January 2009. In 1999, when he was the deputy attorney general under Bill Clinton he recommended that the President grant pardons to 16 terrorists from FALN, a group advocating for complete independence for Puerto Rico, despite the fact that they were responsible for more than 130 bombings, several armed robberies, six slayings and hundreds of injuries. Mr. Holder also approved of President Clinton's controversial pardon of financier Mark Rich on Mr. Clinton's final day in office.
Throughout the pages of "Obama's Enforcer" the authors chronicle the inner workings of Holder's DOJ. You will meet a number of the radical left-wing lawyers who now populate the department and discover just how they operate. Fund and von Spakovsky also review in some detail a number of the most controversial cases during Mr. Holder's tenure including the infamous Gibson Guitar Raid in August 2009, his dismissal of the New Black Panther Party voter intimidation case, his refusal to enforce the Defense of Marriage Act, his steadfast opposition to Voter ID laws, his open hostility to First Amendment freedoms along with his decision that 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and his co-conspirators should be tried in a civilian courtroom in New York City, just a few blocks from where the World Trade Center once stood. And then there is the Pigford Settlement. I had never even heard of it. As you will discover this is quite possibly the most scurrilous case of them all. The details are bound to make your blood boil.
At the end of the day the authors make it abundantly clear that Eric Holder's DOJ is an ideologically driven office that spends much of its time rewarding friends and punishing political enemies. The total disregard for the rule of law is positively breathtaking! As Fund and von Spakovsky remind us "Whether you are a liberal, a moderate, or a conservative with various points of view on different issues, everyone should fear having an attorney general who establishes the precendent that prior laws passed by our elected representatives and signed into law by a popularly elected president can be wiped out of existence by one person in a new administration deciding that Justice will simply not defend that law in court." This is clearly an abuse of power. And because he refused to turn over documents related to Operation Fast & Furious, Mr. Holder is the first sitting attorney general in our nation's history to be found in contempt by the House of Representatives. "Obama's Enforcer: Eric Holder's Justice Department" pulls no punches and leaves no stone unturned while making a very powerful and eloquent case against the sitting attorney general. One certainly has to wonder whose side he is on and what it is going to take to get this man removed. Very highly recommended!
