ONLY THE BRAVE was one heady summer in Santa Cruz, California

I am transiting through London Heathrow airport last week when a huge billboard stops me dead in my tracks: "ONLY THE BRAVE" it reads.... it's Diesel fragrance for men. Comes in a fist-shaped bottle. You tell me if it's any good... I don't know anyone yet who tried it.

But indulge me for a minute while I recall the heady days of Summer 2006; when our local lads stepped out; ONLY THE BRAVE!

Never reached billboard status but we had one glorious OTB season when we got to put men in kilts; sent them out onto the Seventh Sense catwalk (Fall '05), and can still hear the group squeals from women in the audience like they were on a roller coaster.

And... sent local rock band hero off to the Poet & Patriot pub in a raw silk  kilt (that's him with his guitar), where he was, by all accounts, heartily celebrated.

And... put the Santa Cruz Grangemaster in an historic kilt - that's him lifting his kilt apron, only to reveal it's hemp mind you.... (plus proudly sporting our local internet provider CRUZIO t-shirt!)

He was our chosen model (pillar of society; what's under your kilt?!) for collaborative Etsy Contest, inspired by Nearsea Naturals never-before-seen hemp/organic cotton plaid fabric.

And though we did not win the ETSY contest, a man walked into our ONLY THE BRAVE studio one day and walked out totally stoked, the proud new owner of the only hemp/organic cotton plaid kilt in the Land (to our knowledge).

We in our turn were stoked that that fellow was none other than John Muir's ('father' of our National Parks) great grandson!

  • ETSY goes from strength to strength with endless wide array of handmade delights
  • Nearsea Naturals eco-friendly fabrics are second-to-none (scroll down to blog entry June 1st 2006 for ETSY hemp kilt collaboration)
  • OTB Santa Cruz still kits out the entire St Paddy's Day golfer crowd (it's all in the swing) and you'll find them all at Los Gatos' Hannegan's making merry after the game.

About this topic

From the Only The Brave website:

OTB Kilts was founded in 2002 when Regina O'Reilly needed to justify her frequent trips to NYC for the St. Patty’s Parade, Tartan Week and more. Her curiosity was peeked in March of 2001 when she marched in the St. Pat’s Parade down 5th Avenue, alongside her brother Kieran, who wore his Irish National Kilt. That was the day she woke up to a possibility. Like Jane Goodall, she began studying men in KILTS. She recorded the views and voices of countless men, from all walks of life, many who wore the kilt for various reasons – mostly because they love the freedom the kilt offers and the attention they get from women.

OTB came out of a conversation with her mother who described the courage it takes for some men to put on a kilt. We agree, it takes courage to ‘Step Outside the Box’.

The VISION is to create a viable fashion brand that is socially responsible and promotes products that are fair trade and fair made.

Our mission is to LEVEL THE PLAYING FIELD. We believe it's time for men to have more freedom in fashion. We want men to have more choices. And we believe men look sexy and powerful in a KILT.

OTB is about getting outside the box and challenging the norm while having FUN! We take our FUN seriously. Since 2002 OTB has sponsored golf tournaments and many special events that feature men in KILTS.

We are a USA Fair Trade business seeking to inspire full self expression of our species toward Wholeness and ...
