The App that keeps on giving

Let's be clear upfront; OpnMarket is *not* the official application store on Windows Mobile.

Microsoft finally jumped on the app store trail this past year and that was good for the platform.  There are shortcomings to the "official" store.  Two are of particular importance to me:

1.  The Official Store does not allow installation of applications to the storage card
2.  There are many freeware applications not included

Fortunately OpnMarket addresses both of these concerns.  There are literally thousands of application listed and none of them will cost you a cent.  On top of that, you can save precious internal memory by installing these application.

The InterfaceOpen Market Interface

When you logon to OpnMarket you are treated to a nice interface that makes searching the thousands of applications a breeze.  You are greeted in Showcase view and across the top you can browse the following categories:
  • What's New
  • Most Popular
  • Featured
You can change the view with the bottom buttons and move on to Categories if you want to look through a specific type of application, for example, games or utilities or multimedia.  You can also Search for specific title.  Finally, you can keep track of apps that you've already downloaded in My Apps.  This is also a place where you can find updates to applications that you've previously chosen and installed.

Read, Rate and Review

Aren't these the three R's that every schoolchild is supposed to know?  Well, in OpnMarket, before you install the application take advantage or the 1 to 5 star rating system and read the user reviews.  After you install and application you can help future users decisions by adding your own rating and review.  (unlike the Microsoft Marketplace for mobile, you can review applications even if you did not procure them from OpnMarket)

Walking the Walk

So far, I have installed 5 applications from OpnMarket
  • AKToggleWifi - a very simple and small application that turns WiFi on/off with one push of an icon.  Very handy.
  • Skype - A big name addition and this is where I found it.
  • Goomeo - This app will get better when it has a bigger user base.  It has services that utilize device to device connection via mobile to mobile (P2P0 WiFi Direct.  It let's users talk to each other over WiFi like a walkie talkie, transfer files with no size limitation, send text or voice messages, etc.
  • Scrub - This small device helps sort out your contacts based on the data that is missing.  For example, you can pull up everyone that you do not have a birthday for or everyone who doesn't have an email address in your Contact file.
  • IMDb Mobile - Ahhhh...access to the Internet Movie Database.  Priceless.
Room for Growth

They have definitely done a great job with this application and I look forward to seeing them add some more application that are available.  Some freeware that I use and couldn't find on OpnMarket include: Glympse, Waze, Evernote and AP Mobile News.  These glaring holes in their catalog are the ONLY reason that a perfect +5 isn't warranted.  I expect the inventory of apps to grow and I look forward to adding that final point sometime in the near future.

Where to Get It?

Ahh, this is an easy question to answer.  Just get thee to: http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/opnmarket/ or on your WinMo phone type in: http://www.pocketpcfreeware.mobi/opnmarket

Thank you sir. Yeah, I think they will arrive when the freeware apps that are missing jump on board.

Ah, yes, the three R's, which everyone in this day and age should know! Helps others make informed decisions and vice versa ;) I'm just curious, is the process to get an app in this store the same as the official one? I just wonder if there's a difference in quality of the apps. Thanks for enlightening us, JD! :)

The process is about the same. The funny part is that the experience is BETTER in the alternative freeware version. Hmmmmm....

About this topic

Wiki

Freewarepocketpc.net has launched a freeware marketplace for Windows Mobile, called OpnMarket. We haven’t tried this out yet, but it seems promising for freeware apps. Just as with other app catalogs, it will all depend on how many people actually use it.

Features
* – Showcase brings you the latest and most popular free apps
* – Categories, browse thousands of organized apps
* – Search for freeware
* – My Apps lets you get updates for your previously installed apps

OpnMarket is compatible with most of the Windows Mobile Professional devices with touch-screens, once installed it lets you browse, download and install FREE applications directly on your device. OpnMarket will use you mobile network connection or a WiFi connection to download softwares to your phone.
