Last week while flipping through the channels I came across a news report about PITCH: AFRICA. What I saw immediately drew me in and I wanted to know everything about it. I first saw people playing soccer on some weird looking blue field but as I kept watching I realized that this weird blue field is actually an amazing way to help villages in Africa harvest rainwater.
PITCH: AFRICA, which is a project put on by the Annenberg Foundation who has also teamed up with Charlize Theron, is a soccer pitch that is built on top of a rain harvesting and water purifying station. Made of cheap materials such as cargo containers, the makers of PITCH: AFRICA say it can supply clean drinking water to 1,000 people a day for a year.
The PITCH: AFRICA soccer field can be easily moved to different locations to not only harvest rainwater, but bring communities together to watch players play soccer on a new soccer pitch. The soccer pitch has bleachers on both sides of it so spectators can join in on the fun.
Africa is in need of water even with no drought. There is plenty of rain in Africa but the problem is collecting and purifying the water. Dirty water kills thousands if not millions of people every year in Africa. With innovative ideas like PITCH: AFRICA, we are taking steps to bring clean drinking water to all the people of Africa! As a big fan of soccer, I feel this is a great way to help out and I think everyone should do what they can to help out.
Here's a great video of how PITCH: AFRICA works: VIDEO
