Spend a Little More in the Beginning, You Will Be Happier In The End.

When it is time to replace your old chainsaw, what do you do? How do you know what one to choose from? Well, it's a shot in the dark if you ask me, everyone has an opinion about which one is the best. I had a Sears, 10" Craftsman chainsaw which was around 20 years old and had a survived a flood. But, it was getting time to replace the bar and chain and I had a lot of cutting to do. That was when I went looking for a new chainsaw. I did not know where to go so I figured that Lowes was as good as a place as any to start looking. For right around $180.00 you can get an 18" Poulan Pro chainsaw. Model number PP4218AVX.

Description
This particular chainsaw comes with an extra blade and a carrying case. This will also come with 2 ounces of 2 cycle engine oil which will be used with your first gallon of gas. This chainsaw measures 11" in height and 10.5" wide and 33" in overall length. The engine size is a 2.6 cid/42cc and comes with a 18"/45cm guide bar. If you are worried about the weight don't, because this only weighs 20 pounds in the case and 14.5 pounds out of the case. This chainsaw comes fully assembled and has a #3 on the air index scale of a 1-10 scale.

There are a lot of features on this chainsaw that look appealing at first sight, such as; a super clean air filter system which will help with keeping your engine clean and the filters last a lot longer. You do not have to do any of the oiling because there is a gear driver oiler to do it for you. This also has springs located on the bottom of the handle to help with vibrations. This chainsaw takes 30% less effort to get it to start and a tool less chain tensioning system.

For safety reasons there is a chain brake located in front of the handle to help with keeping the chain from getting out of hand. This will stop the chain from rotating while the saw is in the idle position or if you need to stop suddenly. As long as you keep oil in the crankshaft case ( there is an extra heavy duty crankshaft built in this saw) then you will make the engine last 50% longer, also there are 1 ½ times more cutters on the blade for quicker and smoother cutting process.

Experience
Well, it was finally time for a new chainsaw and I was excited to get this one for Father's Day. But, when you get something like this as a gift from your loving wife you would expect it to last longer that fifteen minutes. This was easy enough to use, first off you need to read the manual because there have been a lot of improvements in the last twenty years when it comes to chainsaws. Such as the automatic tensioning device on this saw as to the old style of using a wrench to tighten the chain up with.

The first thing that I had to do was mix the gas and oil together and then pour in the bar/chain oil, once both of these were topped off, then all you have to do is depress the primmer button and pull the choke out. Once this was done then you need to let this warm up and take it easy at first for the so-called break in period.

This chain saw seemed like an excellent buy. The first thing that I noticed was wrong is that even in the idle position the chain kept spinning and every time that I let my finger off of the trigger, the saw would die. No matter what I did I could not keep this saw running. This kept going for about 15 minutes, until I could no longer pull the cord to get it started again. The saw in my opinion was seized up and would not turn over. It was like trying to pull on a brick wall. I tried to pull but it was rock solid.

If there is one thing that I have learned over the years is that is you have something new like this and you have a warranty on it then don't mess with it just take it back to the store.

Warranty
This came with a 30 day store warranty, but after that you had to get a hold of the company unless you purchased the store warranty. Let me tell you this, it is worth the little extra money that it cost to get this warranty because if it was longer than thirty days you have to deal with the company. But, since I have the store warranty all I have to do is bring it back to the store and they will replace free of charge.

Conclusion
I did not replace this chainsaw with the same one because I did not want to only get another 15 minutes of use out of another one. So, I  got the more expensive Husqvarna 20" model instead. I am the type that does not want to do all of my chores in the yard under 100° weather more than once. When something like this happens and you have to spend time taking it back to the store, I think that they should give you a ten percent discount for your time and trouble as long as it is legitimate. I can't give this anything but -5 stars because this particular one was a dud. This does not mean that all of the other ones are bad, I just wanted to let you know of my experience with this one. Good luck if you purchase one of these. I have learned to pay a little extra in the beginning and you can get your job finished with excellent results.
