OMG it is true, these elephants were painting master pieces right in front of my eyes(circles n all)

I have long read online that there are a group of elephants somewhere in the world who are so clever that they know how to paint. Being somewhat of a realist, I was extremely skeptical about elephants being able to paint. Surely it must be a hoax, or a case of people reading too much into elephant doodling! I did some digging around and realised that I needed to pay a visit to Chiang Mai in the northern part of Thailand if I wanted to see these artistic elephants at work with my own eyes.

So, after some preparations and investigations regarding travelling, I embarked on my journey to go to the Maesa Elephant Camp, home to the famous  star elephants which had already appeared in "Ripley's Believe It Or Not" and the "Guinness World Records" ! This camp is  situated in the plush jungle of Chiang Mai and was established 30 years ago, with a dedication to create natural and healthy surroundings for the Asian elephants while working to conserve and breed them.

In this camp, elephants live side by side with their mahout caretakers who teach them how to communicate and paint , at the same time building intimate relationships with them. My trip was worth every moment  because I actually got to see these elephants paint with my very own eyes, it is not a hoax after all. Furthermore, these animal Picassos did not just doodle like I originally assumed they would do, they were freely painting patterns, flowers, trees, and even the 6 circles of the Olympics symbol.

Overall, I gave my experience at this camp a perfect score because it taught me that certain things really needed to be seen to be believed, and also that when there is a will, there is a way!!!!

A little interesting trivia, workers at the camp will pick up elephant droppings/ dung in the river (as shown in photo) and sell them as commodity at the market place.

I don't know if it was the exact same place, but I've seen elephants paint in Thailand before, and yes, you wouldn't believe your eyes! At the same place, I also saw elephants giving people massages, as well as pigs doing math :P Cannot wait to go back!

The Asian elephants are smaller in size and pretty agile, I heard they usually have nice temperament and can be emotionally attached to their human care takers too!!
