I took a moment to write about full reviews on Lunch.  I figured I might say a little bit about Micro Reviews.  There's no writing lesson here.  There's nothing I can say about writing a good Micro Review here. 

I have to admit that I don't do the Micro Review stuff very often.  I only ever wrote one.  And after I turned it into a full review I took it down.  I saw little need in keeping my Micro Review up when the full review was right there for someone to read.  

Yet I do believe there is a place for the Micro Review.  In fact, it may very well be one of Lunch's best features for the simple fact that they are short snippets which either say, "I liked it," or "I didn't like it."  Where as a full review is there for the purpose of expressing and explaining your opinion, the Micro Review is there for giving your opinion without having to go into much detail.  Allow me to explain.

Sometimes you see something.  A movie perhaps, and you love it... but you don't know why exactly.  In a full review you have to explain why.  And when you write a full review people are expecting details and information.  That's your job when you write a full review after all.  On the other hand, Micro Reviews are fantastic for when you sometimes can't explain something.  Almost all the time we encounter things we get a good feeling about... or a bad feeling, but can't explain why.  I, for example, didn't like Shaun of the Dead.  I don't really know why.  And I can't write a full review because I just wouldn't be able to say anything.  The Micro Review is perfect for a moment like this.  They're short, sweet, and give a quick opinion.  And you don't have to be detailed at all.  Let's face it, sometimes we see things that rub us a certain way and we don't fully understand why.  Sometimes you see a movie and you don't like it... but there's nothing wrong with it.  You just didn't like it.  In our world today we seem to think we need an excuse for everything and some of us will dig.  If you can't back yourself up, there's no reason to beat yourself over the head with trying to write a full review.  Just write a Micro Review instead. 

If you can explain yourself then writing a full review is probably the better option.  But this brings me to my next point.  Sometimes you just don't want to write a full review.  And sometimes writing a full review can seem intimidating when there are already 15 other reviews posted.  Someone may have already taken the words right out of your mouth.  Well, the Micro Review comes to the rescue once again.  If you just don't want to write a full review or you're short on time and can't do so... write a Micro Review.  If you can update your Twitter or Facebook status, surely you can spare 140 more charaters to post a Micro Review on Lunch.  It's quick--about five seconds.  Besides, if you decide you want to write a full review... your Micro Review can be a great substitute until you do so.

Lastly, there's a big thing about the Micro Review that some of us hardly think about.  Sometimes people just don't want to read a full review.  Sometimes people don't care for a whole lot of details.  That's fine.  Sometimes people just want to know... was it good?  And they want to know while being spared the details.  Sometimes a simple, "I loved it!" is all someone needs.  They don't need a long detailed review or reasons why something worked and why it didn't.  For those the Micro Review is an excellent tool.

I'm not much for Micro Reviews, but sometimes when I want a quick word for those moments when I don't have time to read a full review I'm glad they're there!

You know, Sean, I'm afraid that I don't agree. I think a micro-review has to be just that, a micro-REVIEW, useful information distilled into a very few quick words. But the key word is "useful" and "this was great" is not useful in and of itself.

Haven't really gotten into micro-reviews yet. I guess I just talk too much LOL! I am working on a list but I see the cleverness of a micro-review; it helps when you can't quite get the words out.

Nice take on Micro Reviews. I participate every so often when the spirit moves me. This is great way for a newcomer to get their feet wet. I guess that was the idea.

Funny you should asks, I'm actually working on a review of the Lists feature. It's slowly coming together, but I haven't been around much to really write for Lunch for the moment. Especially tonight.

Look ma im writing a Quick tip about Quick Tips. See this paragraph alone is an example of why Quick tips are so awesome. I dont need to write a six paragraph article to get across to you that fact, especially if your not that guy. Its in the name really Quick tips are good for that quick write up maybe your thoughts on a movie before you go see it or to insert your opinion on a subject with out having to write a review. What else can I say other than its a cool feature you'll find no where else …

Honestly, I prefer the extensive full reviews, but a Quick tip does have its uses. Sometimes, you don't feel like writing a full review because the movie isn't worth it or maybe you're too busy at the time. Before you post your QUICK TIP, re-read it from the perspective of someone who knows absolutely NOTHING about the topic you're commenting on. "THIS ROCKS" or "THIS SUX" is of no value as a review but it has no value as a Quick Tip either. Without a tiny bit of guidance on the topic, a QUICK TIP is just so much annoying background noise! Sadly, far too many members are making that noise without adding any value to the substantive content of the community.
