I haven't been a big beer drinker for probably over 10 years. Wine has been more my choice when i'm looking for an adult beverage. But we've had a couple of gastro pubs (Simmzy's which i have reviewed and Brewco) open up in downtown Manhattan Beach, and they both serve many boutique beers on tap. I sampled a few and nothing really jumped out at me... in fact, I was even drinking wine at Simmzys for a while. But then I tried this beer named "Racer 5." Great name first off, but then it grew on me. All of a sudden i found myself in the Whole Foods beer section loading up on every IPA i can find, but nothing compares to my beloved Racer 5. I'm not sure how long this obsession will last, but right now i find myself frequently thinking... "wow... a Racer 5 would really taste good with this".
I'll leave the actual tasting notes to someone else who has more experience and a better palate, but the flavor and balance of this IPA really hits the spot for me. Racer 5 is the stick by which i measure all other beers. Oh... and btw... it pairs exceptionally well with the pulled pork breakfast burrito at Simmzys... yes... i said breakfast burrito.
This is a very well balanced IPA. I love hops but sometimes IPAs and double-IPAs can have that in-your-face-hop-pop that is a bit reminiscent of skunk. With Racer 5 you get that initial punch of hop followed by a floral, honey bloom that tapers into a green apple bite. It's 7% abv in case that matters to you.
This hoppy American IPA is a full bodied beer brewed American pale and crystalmalts, and heavily hopped with Chinook, Cascade, Columbus and Centennial. There's a trophy in every glass.
