Shield's concept (and conceit) is to create a novel solely using words, sentences, and sometimes whole paragraphs -- taken from other people's works. Sounds intriguing, right? And it is. Unfortunately the promise of the premise does nothing to make it into a good read. It's interesting, it hangs together, it's catchy, but in the end I was somehow left unsatisfied. I applaud him for the attempt, however, and I'm glad I read it. Even though I'm an English teacher, before reading REALITY HUNGER, I had never heard of David Shields. After reading the book and doing some "research" (I used Wikipedia so Shields should be proud), I discovered that Shields has become something of a minor celebrity in American literature. If the majority of his works are anything like REALITY HUNGER, it's not surprising that he's a minor celebrity in literature because the type of "writing" in REALITY HUNGER appeals …
