Firefox User No More, Safari 4 Really Delivers and Puts the Fox Back in its Hole

For a long time, I was a huge fan of Mozilla Firefox.  I really swore by it, but one day I started to notice its glitches.  For example, not all of my Facebook photos would load or the browsers spell check would go on and off.  At first these were just little things, but then I started to notice that Mozilla wasn't actually that fast compared to Safari.  Still, I decided to keep using Firefox, despite its short comings.  I learned though that the newest version of the browser isn't all that compatible with MAC's.  However, the folks over at Mozilla had just released Camino, a web browser that was compatible for MAC users, but I quickly found out that it still had a long way to go and for a short period of time went back to Firefox.  However, last night Apple released Safari 4, and all I can say is that I haven't been happier with a browser.
For starters, Safari 4 looks very simple, at least on the MAC.  It's silver like past editions and that's about it which in my opinion is very good.  Apple had tried to do something new for Safari 4's beta stage by having tabs be on the top of the browser instead of under the bookmark bar, but they quickly realized that wasn't so great and returned them where they are supposed to be.  What I find really nice about these tabs is that they are really unobtrusive.  Here is a screenshot of the browser below:
Also new in this edition of Safari is viewing your web history with Apples famous coverflow.  This is a really nice edition because sometimes if you are looking for a page that you might have looked at a couple of months ago you would probably remember what it looked like more than remembering what its name was.  Now you can just go to your top sites page which is also a great tool and I'll talk about it in a minute and skim through your history visually.  Picture below:

The top sites feature was something that was introduced in the beta.  Whenever you open up a tab now, a page, kind of like cover flow will come up with all the top sites you have been to.  Then you can just click on them and the page will load right away.  This is really nice just for the sake of connivence. A picture of my top sites is listed below:

The best feature that Safari is its super fast speed, web pages load in a second.  There is no more waiting for web pages to load.  When you click on a top page, the site is there on your screen instantly.  I will be the first to tell you that there is no other web browser that is faster, trust me, I've used a lot of them.  I usually have something I don't care for with the subject I am writing about, but in this instance, that's just not the case, Safari 4 is awesome!  My only issue is that I am still getting to used to it a little.

Overall, if you are a MAC user running Firefox, I urge you to make the switch back to or as a new user to Safari 4.  The browser is sleek, fast and while it is still new, I don't think it will let you down. Unfortunately for MAC users at least, I think Firefox is a thing of the past.  Safari 4 is definitely  in.  5/5!

Great review. I have been using Firefox for a long time, too; and have recently noticed many of the glitches you mention in your review. I don't have a Mac but I'm halfway tempted to download Safari for my windows based PC to see how it works. I'm not really a fan of the menu format/layout on Macs, but I think that is something I could get used to given time. The one feature that sounds especially pleasant is the "tab cover flow," especially since I use the same few websites ALL THE TIME. Sometimes I wonder though, since it takes me a second to type enough letters to get the site I want if it actually saves time by moving the cursor to select it.

Anyways, thanks for the great review. I love all the pictures. Very informative. I'll let you know if I make the switch!

Thanks a lot for the Kudos! Ya, the tabbed top pages with cover flow is really great and Safari is worth the download even for windows. I used it once and a while when I had a dell.
