The Santa Barbara International Marathon is one of the coolest races to be added to California's calendar in years.

Overview: It's an all-around pleasant race, cruising along mostly at sea level with mountain views, incredibly friendly fans and a downhill finish at the oceanside. Not only can you run a marathon, you can then walk just a few feet and have a beachfront celebration that looks like a Corona commercial.

There's one itty bitty evil hill, but you'll forgive it when you spend the next day in nearby wine country.

My Experience: In 2009, the marathon's inaugural year, I ran in the relay with three women from my business. Having the first leg, I got to enjoy the anticipation at the starting line with all those people running a full 26.2 I only had to go 7 miles. It was a cold morning, but the music got me motivated and hopping. People were friendly and ready to run.

After the gun went off, I started in my first marathon. What fun! A whole bunch of people who shared my passion for running were jogging on the streets of my neighborhood. The course was well marked, and volunteers were cheering and friendly all the way.

I was energized by the runners around me, and even though I definitely slowed down after mile 6, I handed off to leg 2 within my goal time.

Santa Barbara is easy to navigate, and there are lots of spots along the course that are ideal for supportive spectators. I was able to follow my relay team along the course by car, picking up each runner as they finished their legs. The first three of us were at the finish line cheering in our anchor.

Management: As far as I can tell, everyone from the race director to the program designer are runners. They all simply get it. They created a race they'd enjoy running, and in doing so, they made it a really fun, safe and well-organized event.

I've attended several running marathons before, but never actually officially participated. I'll have to train and consider it one of these days. Thanks for your take on this one. It sounds great!
