Pure Magic! The Most Romantic Island in the World!

Santorini is an island which I've heard of, seen many images of & dreamt of visiting. I finally got the chance in 2003 during my visit to Greece. Santorini is however not an island to talk about but rather one to walk about. It is a happy place & I met my very own "Tom Cruise" there ;-) An amazing encounter, a charming guy with whom I've an interesting conversation. I also met an Australian lady, Connie, & we had the most wonderful time at the sunset in Oia. Having said this, Santorini is a place you must go there in person to experience. It is one of the most beautiful islands in the world... truly magical!!! Seeing Greece without visiting Santorini does not complete the visit. Remember, go & visit Santorini. It's an island full of spectacular vistas & most friendly people. A most romantic and charming island!



2 Faces of Santorini

Thira or Fira is the largest town in the island of Santorini. It is where one can stay for the night or if you prefer a more quiet & scenic environs you may proceed to Oia where you can sip away your cool long drink & watch the sun set every day around 7-8.30 pm. Personally, if you are driving, consider staying in Oia for 2 nights min. At the very least, if the first sunset didn't turned out to be spectacular, you can try your luck again the next day. :-)))

Thira turned out to be very pleasant for me. I talked to some of the nicest people in Greece here. As soon as I was out of the hotel & on the side street towards the center of the town, this guy at a restaurant was already saying hello. He was really nice & made me feel welcome. As far as I can remember, I talked to Greeks most on this island. In 2 days, I've talked to at least 10 locals here while less when I was touring the mainland! Amazing! 

An island that epitomizes the service industry!

Oia is a charming little town north of the island of Santorini. It's a more beautiful town than Thira & has a charmlike quality to it. You'll feel it in the small houses, the arts & crafts shops, the taverns & the layout of this small town. Oia is simply lovable!



Ok, here I was at this breathtaking spot, looking for a soul to take a photo for me. It was not easy at all! 

Oia, a tourist attraction, yet, not many people walking around. Or is it because most don't venture far from the heart of the town & just came here to shop? I don't know. But I wished they could have enjoyed this view with me. 

God answers prayers & finally my savior turned up! I love this pic he took!

I like architecture & I like white. This one is not something I get to see at home. Something unique...

Something to remember by...

Oia is definitely the best place to relax. The cafes at the roof tops have magnificent views & the hostesses are some of the very best in the world. All in all, I've enjoyed Oia tremendously; it's truly a heavenly place & a place where fairy tales come true!


Greek Frappe
From the roof top of Pelekanos Cafe, you get this marvelous view. Relax & talk to Pamagiotis. He made excellent coffee frappe :-) Nice chap, took lots of pictures for me & we shared some travel stories. There wasn't anyone at the rooftop even though it has the best view of the crater. Magnificent! I had the entire paradise to myself!

As for the coffee frappe, trust me, it's the best in Greece! Not only do you have a thirst quencher, you've the best view to accompany it. What a perfect combo!

Fantastic photos! I just love the white buildings and blue water. This is one the top places on my travel list. Can't wait to see it! Sounds like you had an amazing time and met some great people.

Santorini is truly worth a visit! And when you're around the region, do make sure you visit Mykonos & Crete islands too!

I've been to Santorini and I stayed for 5 days in Oia, and I agree with everything you said. It's absolutley breathtaking and peaceful there. It was a great place to relax and read a book. The sunset is gorgeous, and I love the town atmosphere. We even saw a couple getting married! I would go back (or live there!) in a heartbeat.

Santorini is a small, circular archipelago of volcanic islands located in the southern Aegean Sea, about 200 km (120 mi) southeast from Greece's mainland. The largest island is known as Thēra, forming the southernmost member of the Cyclades group of islands, with an area of approximately 73 km2 (28 sq mi) and a 2001 census population of 13,670. It is composed of the Municipality of Thira (pop. 12,440) and the Community of Oía (Οία, pop. 1,230, which includes 268 inhabitants resident on the offshore island of Therasia, lying to the west). These have a total land area of 90.623 km2 (34.990 sq mi), which also includes the uninhabited islands of Nea Kameni, Palaia Kameni, Aspronisi, and Christiana (all part of the Municipality of Thira).

Santorini is essentially what remains of an enormous volcanic explosion, destroying the earliest settlements on what was formerly a single island, and leading to the creation of the current geological caldera.

A giant central lagoon, more or less rectangular, and measuring about 12 by 7 km (7.5 by 4.3 mi), is surrounded by 300 m (980 ft) high steep cliffs on three sides. The island slopes downward from the cliffs to the surrounding Aegean Sea. On the fourth side, the lagoon is separated from the sea by another much smaller island called Therasia; the lagoon merges with the sea in two places, in the northwest and southwest.
