Fun under perfect conditions, but conditions are not normally perfect...

I wanted to like the Sanyo VPC-WH1 HD Camcorder I got from Amazon Vine. Who wouldn't want the ability to take videos above and below the waterline if you were on a holiday in the Carribean? While it all works, it's not the best picture quality you could find unless all the conditions are just perfect. And that doesn't happen very often...

I found that darker scenes ended up showing a fair amount of graininess, both above and below the water. That's probably not too bad if it's a bright sunny beach day in crystal clear waters, but northern coast lines could be problematic. Same with the individual picture quality. I've gotten spoiled by even cheap cameras having considerably high pixel counts. 2 megapixels for this offering is underwhelming, to say the least. Yeah, it's going to get the picture, but it's going to look like typical tourist vacation stuff, not anything spectacular.

I also see where a few others have had issues with water leakage in their camcorders, even when using them under specified conditions as stated in the specs. That's a bit worrisome, as who wants to pay over $300 for a camcorder that is potentially going to leak and have to be repaired for another bundle of cash? I haven't seen the problem (yet?) myself, but now I'm concerned.

All things considered, I'm not sure I'd recommend this as your first choice for underwater videos. The output is less than stellar, and the potential lifespan of the camera may not be all that great.

I recently had the opportunity to test out the Sanyo VPC-WH1 HD Waterproof Camcorder. I've been jumping feet first into the world of digital camcorders, but I'm still new to the medium and therefore most of my thoughts are coming from the point of view of ease of use and quality from a non-enthusiast. My first impression right out of the box was how sturdy this little Sanyo digi-cam is and how extremely easy it was to get it set-up for use. I had it unwrapped and charging in minutes, and after an …
