Scotty McCreery Debuts With "Clear as Day"

Seventeen year old American Idol winner Scotty McCreery is set to release his first album, "Clear as Day," on October 4. The deep-voiced crooner is out to make a name for himself and become more than just another former Idol contestant; which, let's face it, isn't always your ticket to fame and fortune. We've seen many Idol careers go south, but McCreery is determined to separate himself from the rest of the pack.

Carrie Underwood. Kelly Clarkson. David Cook. Chris Daughtry. Kellie Pickler. These are some pretty big names to live up to when it comes to Idol alums. The boy has talent, but it's remained to be seen whether he has what it takes to add his name to that list. He has, however, put together a decent collection of songs to complete his debut record.

The album starts off with a song called "Out of Summertime" which, upon first listen, I would've sworn it was Josh Turner singing. For those of you that watched Scotty on American Idol, you know that Turner is one of his main musical influences. He became famous for his rendition of Josh's monster hit, "Your Man." However, I believe that he might be a little too much of a copy-cat. I feel like he is purposely trying to sound like him. His voice sounds fantastic, but it's like a carbon copy of Josh's.

Two songs that stand out for me are "Water Tower Town" and "Walk in the Country." "Water Tower Town" is about small town living, which I can relate to. It talks about Friday night high school football, church being the only place open on Sundays, and knowing everyone you come across on the street. Sure, the subject has been covered hundreds of times in country music, but it doesn't feel like a remake of any other song that I've heard. This one is a little more original. "Walk in the Country" is probably the record's highest point for me. I really like the instrumentals and his voice sounds fantastic.

"Write My Number on Your Hand" and his current single, "The Trouble With Girls," are a little on the cheesy side, lyric-wise, but it's age appropriate. If Taylor Swift can sing about fairytales and Prince Charming at the age of 21, I think it's okay for Scotty to sing about puppy love at the age of 17.

Overall, not a bad debut. I can't help but feel like it's a bit of a Josh Turner impersonation, but it's a pretty decent collection of songs. If you'd like to learn more about Scotty, you can check him out here:

I've heard the same thing about Scotty- that he just seemed like a carbon copy of Turner, so I guess we'll just have to wait and see if he can add his name to that impressive list. Great review :)
