Seattle Rises to the Occasion!

  • Jan 28, 2010
In most leagues, when you add an expansion team, that expansion team is probably not going to do too well in their first season, let alone seasons to follow. This is especially the case when it comes to Major League Soccer. The expansion teams over the years have been downright terrible. The San Jose Earthquakes finished dead last their first season in the league and finished second to last the season after. Yet this past season the MLS added a new team to the league which decided to show the MLS and its fans that an expansion team can do great its first season.

The Seattle Sounders FC not only built tons of hype before the season even started, they were able to sell 20,000 seasons tickets. This is amazing because that’s two thirds of the stadiums capacity for soccer games. The fans started to rally up and form supporter clubs. Even Drew Carry jumped on board to become a minor owner of the team. It was weird, because I was really excited about the team joining the MLS. The structure of how the club would be run was different than most MLS team. They decided to run the team similar to the Spanish teams, FC Barcelona and Real Madrid, where the fans had say in what happens with the club.

The season started off great for the team, not only did they sell out all of their games, they ended up expanding the capacity of the stadium to accommodate more fans. The team did exceptionally well against big teams like Chicago and Los Angeles and even ended up making it to the quarter finals of the MLS Playoff.  The Sounders brought home the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup that season as well and Seattle was given the unofficial name of "Soccer City USA".  If I wasn’t a huge Los Angeles Galaxy fan the Seattle Sounders FC would be my team of choice!

One thing that Seattle must prove to the MLS and its fans is that they can continue to keep the hype like they did in their first season.  This is very important not only for the team but the league as well to prove that the MLS can grow and expand.  Next season the Philadelphia Union joins the league; let’s hope they can do as good as the Seattle Sounders FC did!

About this topic

The team was established in November 2007 as an MLS expansion team. The following year fans chose the Sounders name for the team through an online poll. They are the third Seattle soccer team to share the heritage of the Sounders name. The Sounders FC majority owner is Hollywood producer Joe Roth, and minority owners are Adrian Hanauer, Paul Allen, and comedian Drew Carey. Two time MLS Cup winner Sigi Schmid is the team's head coach.

Sounders FC home matches are played at Qwest Field. Along with many organized supporter groups, a 52-member marching band called the Sound Wave supports the team at each home game. Seattle Sounders FC played their first game on March 19, 2009, to a sold out crowd of 32,523, defeating the New York Red Bulls 3–0. They won their first trophy on September 2, 2009, after defeating D.C. United 2-1 at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C. in the 2009 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup final.
