Finally, after almost 5 years, Lee Chang-Dong’s “Secret Sunshine” is getting a widespread U.S. release and it is being released under the Criterion Collection label. Winner of numerous international awards, this film may be the first Korean movie to be selected by Criterion.

The film portrays the story of a woman who seemingly lost everything, found something and finally lost everything once again. It is a story about faith and resilience; and is an honest portrayal of religion, of faith and of humanity. Jeon Do-Yeon makes for a fantastic lead and proves once more why she is one of Korea’s most sought-after performers. She has won multiple best actress awards for this movie. This is one of Lee’s best films.
See Full Review here. Yes, I own the Korean release but the Criterion version is still worth getting on Bluray.

Wow, I just checked and it does appear to be the only film in their catalog from either North or South Korea.

This is one of my favorite movies from S. Korea of all time. You should read the full review, I recently re-watched it and I decided to give it a short 5 star rather than the strong 4.5. Amazing movie that portrays the reality behind the rising popularity of Christianity in Korea and one woman's brush with tragedy.

This director has, on several occasions has managed to silence my voice because of the powerful portrayal of life in his films; it just strikes a …
