Finally, after almost 5 years, Lee Chang-Dong’s “Secret Sunshine” is getting a widespread U.S. release and it is being released under the Criterion Collection label. Winner of numerous international awards, this film may be the first Korean movie to be selected by Criterion.
The film portrays the story of a woman who seemingly lost everything, found something and finally lost everything once again. It is a story about faith and resilience; and is an honest portrayal of religion, of faith and of humanity. Jeon Do-Yeon makes for a fantastic lead and proves once more why she is one of Korea’s most sought-after performers. She has won multiple best actress awards for this movie. Yes, I own the Korean release but the Criterion version is still worth getting on Bluray.
