Sixth Street, you have been my best and worst friend at times, but there will never come a day when I stop loving you. For those of you who aren't aware of sixth street, it is basically a bunch (I would definitely say over 100) bars on Sixth Street in downtown Austin. There are two sides of Sixth: Dirty Sixth and West Sixth. West Sixth is mainly for the young professionals crowd. I haven't spent much time there except when my friends and I decided to have Sunday Funday. Every Sunday a bar on West Sixth has unlimited mimosas for 7 dollars. So before my champagne glass was ever empty, a new drink was brought it me. It was pure amazement. Did I mention they had brunch too? I think we stayed for a good eight hours.... until they were out of mimosas, and lots of drunkenness ensued. We left the place at 7 PM and went home and crashed. Who wouldnt? But Dirty Sixth is where college students, who are of course "of legal age to drink", go to drink their stressful week of school away. Nothing really happens until 11, and then Sixth Street is PACKED with girls in dresses and high heels, and guys who buy drinks for these "pretty" ladies. Bar hopping is usually the only thing to do because most of the bars are so packed, but thats okay because there are tons of bars to go to. People of course have their favorites. Thursday Night is College Night and the bar specials are ridiculous. I kid you not, at Shakespeares, I can get my own personal pitcher of ANYTHING for $5. Yes, if I want a pictcher to myself of Vodka Tonic, I will get a pitcher to myself of Vodka Tonic for $5. This is why I stopped going out on Thursdays, because needless to say, I never made it to my 9 AM class on Friday... Sixth Street is where mayhem ensues. I think maybe only twice have I seen people go to jail for public intoxication, and thats usually because guys are fighting. Other than that, all you see is a sea of drunk college students who are out trying to have good time.

Wiki

6th Street is a historic street and entertainment district in Austin, Texas.[1] East 6th Street is the center of the city's live music scene.

6th Street was formerly named Pecan Street under Austin's older naming convention, which had east-west streets named after trees and north-south streets named afterTexas rivers (the latter convention remains in place).[2] The area around nearby 4th Street and 6th Street is the heart of the Austin entertainment district.[3][4] Many bars,clubsmusic venues, and shopping destinations are located on E. 6th Street betweenCongress Avenue and Interstate 35 and many offer live music at one time or another during the week.[5]

E. 6th Street plays host to a wide variety of events each year, ranging from music andfilm festivals (such as South by Southwest) to biker rallies (such as The Republic of Texas Biker Rally) and the Pecan Street Festival.[6]

Traffic is generally blocked on E. 6th Street and most crossroads from I-35 to Brazos Street on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings (depending on pedestrian traffic), as well as holidays and special events to allow the crowds to walk unfettered to the many venues that line the street. On New Year's EveMardi Gras, and Halloween nights tens of thousands of revelers can walk only one way depending on the side of the street they are on.
