Oh yeah, I went back to the Darkside

Before I begin, let me just say that even though I thouroughly dissected the Family Guy tv show for it's faults, follys, slopiness and just plain "take that!" attitude, I'm a sucker for Star Wars and found Family Guy's send ups irrisistable to pass up watching and much to my chagrin, found their first offering Blue Harvest to be a lot of fun.

Something Something Something Darkside however leaves a little to be desired.

Lets be fair, Blue Harvest was a very faithful adaption and send up of Star Wars, kept the story going, toned down many of Family Guys worst habits and made sure that it was Star Wars with Family Guy you were watching.  Something Something Something Darkside however is Family Guy with Star Wars in it, and you know what that means:

Non Sequitor jokes, plenty of pop culture remarks, musical numbers, tastelessness, jokes that don't end, jokes that weren't funny to begin with and plenty of padded out scenes to compensate the fact that they just couldn't come up with enough material to fill the run time which is odd since some scenes feel rushed and since this is direct to DVD, some swearing thrown in for good measure, not that it's a big deal.

NOW it could be worse and it sure could have been.  The Pop Culture stuff which could have gone into overkill when it's revealed that Yoda is Chris's boss in the show, who is a pop culture machine.  How easily it could have gone down boring street if that was the case.  The musical number is kept very short and sweet this time around and while this is a case of following the source material, Herbert the Perverted old man who was Obi Wan only rears his annoying head twice in the proceedings.  Oh and I'm sure they'll do it in the follow up but thank GOD there was no Giant Chicken fight with Han Peter, that would have eaten up a good 10 minutes by itself in a series known for again, it's padding, and even though Blue Harvest didn't have any, I only counted one cutaway in SSSDS, and it's short.

NOW back to the bad, dug out of the mothballs for no reason was another "Remember this" from the 80s much like Blue Harvest did in one scene and it's something that I honestly forgot about and seeing it as a time waster just made me groan and wonder what got left on the cutting room floor.  Some scenes get truncated for no reason and others just lag on and on.  In Blue Harvest, we see some quick glimpses around the Cantina and snippets of the action scenes in the Death Star assault and nothing dragged on since we got the message.  Here, you see practicully the whole Asteroid chase, almost as if they were having so much fun paying homage, they didn't dare cut anything down when they had to, but when it comes to scenes on Hoth in the infirmiry, or Joe the Probedroid they get completely glossed over and forgotten about.  The regular series even in one episode did a parody of Rocky's training from Rocky IV and here THEY REPEAT THE SAME JOKE, and THIS TIME they have Rocky footage!  Darth Stewie also has just a few too many gay jokes.  Some are funny and some are just plain LAME and squicky.  Last but not least is Chewbrian acting, like well, Brian in a remark toward the end.  Not that the characters are really in character but we were spared rhetoric and Author Avatarism from Chewbrian in Blue Harvest as he was more or less in character as a sidekick to Han Peter but I guess they just NEEDED to cram a line in toward the end in this one and while I was prepared to let it slide, I couldn't cause I'm not about to let them get away with it and not have it go and all it did is remind me that I was in fact watching a Family Guy product.

All I suppose isn't completly lost and while I don't REGRET the purchase and found it fun for the ost part, I don't see myself revisiting this one nearly as often.  I surely hope that "We Have a Bad Feeling About This" which will be the Return of the Jedi parody will go back to the idea of Star Wars with some Family Guy in it.  It'll be the only way fans can say that Return is better then Empire.
Chris and Stewie go over some ground rules Darth Stewie has trouble sending a holo message Darth Stewie and his Snowtroopers Han Peter plans on parking for repairs Rocky IV! Just what we like to see in Star Wars!! TOM SELLICK! Just what w...forget it you know

I liked this a little more than you do although I do agree with many of your critiques.  I liked this a little more than Blue Harvest if only because I laughed more, although you're definitely right when you talk about how there were far more pop culture references.  Family Guy hardly has humor that offends me, but I do get sick of the way the show seems to be tossing darts at a board with a blindfold on.  The bit here which I was totally not impressed with at all was Chris's Boss as Yoda.  I really coul've done without all the Pop Culture references.  He complained about how that whole scene in the cave "Stops the movie dead," right before that musical number... well, his pop culture crap really stopped that one dead for a moment.

I'll probably end up watching the Return of the Jedi one, but needless to say my expectations probably dropped a little this time around.  I don't usually expect much from Family Guy but even Something Something Something Darkside was actually a bit of overkill in some of the departments (particularly in some of its long winded jokes... I was just as glad as you were when we didn't have to suffer through a long Chicken Fight too).

tell me about it. "It doesn't make much sense and stops the movie dead" when it's actually a piece of erie foreshadowing for future events. I hope the stopping dead remark was for the song and dance number that followed, but that statement would be played in half the episodes then. I'm still going to look forward to "We Have a Bad Feeling About This", but yes my expectations are pretty lowered on that too.

Blue Harvest was, for the most part, not a bad Star Wars Parody.  On the other hand it was filled with the same old Family Guy jokes.  The sort of hit or miss jokes that have become so common in the show.  Something Something Something Darkside  suffers terribly from the same old problems.  There are so many unfunny jokes and all that Something Something Something Darkside (a horribly unfunny title) doesn't rise that far above its predecessor... but it IS better.   …

Not so clever Family Guy follow up to Blue Harvest. Not as bad as it could have been.

About this topic

"Something, Something, Something, Dark Side" is an upcoming hour-long episode of the FOX animated series Family Guy and the sequel episode to the Star Wars parody "Blue Harvest", to be followed by the future spoof of Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi currently named "We Have A Bad Feeling About This". It will retell the story of Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back as "Blue Harvest" did with Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, recasting characters from Family Guy into roles from the film. It was originally scheduled to air as the 7th season finale, but has been pushed back to season 8. Like the previous installment, the poster for "Dark Side" is based on the design of an actual Star Wars poster.
