COULD HAVE BEEN A CLSSIC BUT STILL FUN

Spawn/Batman

SPAWN & BATMAN

If ever there were two characters from different companies that needed a crossover it was these two right here. If done right it could be the greatest teaming of two different brands ever. Add in Frank Miller as the writer and Todd McFarlane doing the artwork and you should have that classic. Well that is not the case here but I will admit that I did enjoy it. Still I expected more form this when I first read it years ago.

Things have been weird lately for Batman as he is finding robots that have human heads inside of them, heads still in pain. His investigation leads him to New York City where things get even stranger for the Dark Knight. It is here when he arrives that he runs into a vigilante as he thinks named Spawn. The two have no love for one another as they battle in the N.Y. shadows. But when much bigger things besides their dislike for each other turns up they become unlikely allies.

Now the story here is a bit crazy but then again it is a comic and takes place mostly in the world of Spawn. Now when I think of these two together I think of dark stories with depth, I assume you would agree. Well there isn't much here as far as depth and the companies I am sure were hoping you would go off what you previously knew about the two. The thing is I am not talking about them two, the lead villain ere was very interesting and if this "one shot" had been given more pages and time it could have been great to learn more about all that.

But when this came out all everyone wanted to see was who would win in a fight between the two. Well this comic makes it very obvious, spawn would rightfully crush Bats. But given all we know about the caped crusader is that if he survived the fight he would come back with the proper equipment to defeat Spawn. In all honesty he is probably the only non-super powered hero that is capable of this. Well the fights are good here between the two and turn out just how you would think. But it is the war of words that really had me interested here. Some people did not like the writing style here because some thought it made both seem childish. Me personally I felt that it made them seem like actual people who disliked each other and just happened to be guys with powers and such.

Now this is not Frank Miller's best work but with the short story that is presented over all it was a good effort. As far as McFarlane goes it is classic McFarlane art work here. At times cartoonish but not overly so and since this more of a fun little get together for fans I think his style fit it. So over all I would say that this was not the meeting that we had all hopped for but it was far from horrible in my opinion. Plus I loved the ending here, always has me cracking up.

I kinda liked the art on this one, and I thought it had some cleverness behind some of the panels. But I am not sure, it just felt a little too much for marketing than story. Did you also read BATMAN/SPAWN: war devil?
