Stateline a book

A Dan Reno novel by Dave Stanton

Excellent Tale With Great Action and a Very Compelling Main Character!

  • Aug 4, 2014

My review is based on a copy received directly from the author but reflects my own opinion.

This book was difficult to put down once I started it.  Dan Reno (a shortened version of Reynolds) is a private investigator barely getting by and mostly interested in being drunk.  He goes to Lake Tahoe for the wedding of one of his ex-wife's relatives.  Before the wedding can take place, the groom is murdered.  The groom was from the very wealthy Bascom family.  Bascom Sr. makes Dan a very lucrative offer to hunt down the killer of his son and bring the killer to him so he can mete out his revenge.

The money is too great for Dan to refuse so he accepts the offer and starts his investigation.  This seems to rile the local police and he gets several "unpleasant" visits from them.  As Dan continues with his task, the forces behind Bascom's death first try to deter him and then start coming at him more aggressively.

I highly enjoyed this book and my only misgivings about it is how Dan can function so well considering the poor way he treats his body and gets deeply inebriated.  Dan is a very troubled individual that hits the bottle a little too much but he is also a very likable character and the reader can really root for him throughout.    At a later point in the book he will enlist the aid of his friend Cody who apparently is a returning character from prior Dan Reno books.  I was not familiar with this series of books before but will go back and look for some of the prior books as well as any future Dan Reno books.

About this topic

Cancel the wedding-the groom is dead.
When a tycoon's son is murdered the night before his wedding, the enraged and grief-stricken father offers investigator Dan Reno (that's Reno, as in no problemo), a life-changing bounty to find the killer. Reno, nearly broke, figures he's finally landed in the right place at the right time. It's a nice thought, but when a band of crooked cops get involved, Reno finds himself not only earning every penny of his paycheck, but also fighting for his life.
Who committed the murder, and why? And what of the dark sexual deviations that keep surfacing? Haunted by his murdered father and a violent, hard drinking past, Reno wants no more blood on his hands. But a man's got to make a living, and backing off is not in his DNA. Traversing the snowy alpine winter in the Sierras and the lonely deserts of Nevada, Reno must revert to his old ways to survive. Because the fat bounty won't do him much good if he's dead
