Fast-Paced Awesomeness for SuperQueers of All Stripes

Alicia Goranson had me hooked within a few pages. This story of supergeeks and transheroes in Boston is a great twist on the traditional superhero genre. It isn't a graphic novel, but perhaps it should be. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in trans fiction, gay awesomeness, or anyone who is interested in exploring the boundary between superhero and vigilante. This boundary has by now become a staple of alternative super hero storylines, but never quite like this. Just read it and see.

The story follows to young adults as they navigate their ways through Boston and life on a low budget. The characters are interesting and complex and well drawn. The action is fast and the descriptions are nicely evocative. I could visualize the dark street corners and queer bars. And the story grabs you and makes you root for the main characters against all odds.

I liked Goranson's commitment to realism and real complexity of character. However, there were two characters in particular whose actions or words didn't ring true to me. Either I couldn't tell what had just happened, or I couldn't see why Marky was suddenly stalking off angry at Kim or Kim was trying to prove something to Marky. At any rate, this is a minor quibble in an otherwise excellent story.
