So Treadstone is Not The Only Project the Government Wants Hidden!

This movie takes place at the same time that the story for The Bourne Ultimatum takes place and I would suggest seeing that film first before seeing this one.  Having said that, we find out that the Treadstone project was but one of many covert operations led by some unnamed branch of the US Government's espionage side.  Another project involves giving operatives meds (it is the explained what they are about but I do not want to put too many spoilers in this) of varying colors.

Jeremy Renner is one of the operatives training in Alaska.  He loses some of his meds so he takes dangerous shortcuts to get back to a remote cabin where another operative awaits.  Meanwhile we see a big government group led by Stacy Keach and Ed Norton deciding to end the program and to eliminate all the operatives.  They send a drone plane to eliminate Renner and his contact but Renner escapes but the government guys think he was killed.

Renner heads first to Chicago to get his hidden stash of passports and weapons (like Matt Damon in the first movie) and heads to the place where he was originally fed the meds.  However, the government guys want that med lab wiped out too and they arrange to have everybody killed.  Rachel Weitz's character gets away and later when the bad guys try to kill her again Renner shows up and saves her.  Soon they are on the run.  This also bears a strong resemblance to The Bourne Identity where Bourne and Marie are on the run from the bad government guys who have technology to get into any camera or database in the world in an instant (is this what Snowden was warning about?).

The movie seems to take off from there but some of it is a little hard to follow.  There is later a high speed chase on a motorcycle that was difficult to follow and seemed to go on forever.  The movie is very much directed like the Matt Damon Bourne films and we also see that Pamela Landy may not have been successful after all in the Bourne Ultimatum so it looks like the writers may have left it open to marry the Treadstone bad guys with these bad guys in a future film.  Wondering if Matt Damon will be teaming with Renner if a sequel is due.  Renner is a little bit different from Bourne because his body is chemically enhanced so he may be more powerful than Bourne was.

Overall this film was not as good as the earlier films but it is a lot better than most sequels I have seen.  I give it four stars.

Having the taste of the last Die Hard still in my mouth, made this film look like an Oscar winner. Actually, as flawed as this film was and as slow as the first half of it was, it was still better than most movie sequels.

Promoted as a sequel but “The Bourne Legacy” actually feels more like a spin-off. I really enjoyed the “Bourne Trilogy” with Matt Damon in the lead role. The first three movies were smart, exciting and action-driven which made full use of the character created by Robert Ludlum. This new movie takes place about the same time as the events of “Bourne Ultimatum” and has a new character in the lead played by Jeremy Renner.      In this sequel, …

Star Rating:         The Bourne Legacy is a competent and satisfying spy action thriller, although I suspect it will be problematic for those unfamiliar with the first three Bourne films. This fourth chapter isn’t quite the start of a new trilogy, as some of the ads have suggested; the events of the previous installment, The Bourne Ultimatum, are heavily referenced, as are bits and pieces running through all the films, most notably the Treadstone and Blackbriar …

Has Matt Damon given up the Bourne movies? He excelled as Jason Bourne and is a hard act to follow. Bourne Legacy is less of a sequel, and more of a spin off.    Certainly elements of it work very well. Jeremy Renner brings his own brand of intensity to the role, and I like Rachel Weisz as the doctor with whom he goes on the run. I loved the way the scene in her house unfolded with all its twists and turns.    Renner plays a character not named Bourne, but …

Slooooooooooooow to start and leave audience with no idea what exactly is happening. One could guess but it didn't make it fun for viewers. Can skip 1st hour if you are busy!     Worse, without Matt Damon, I doubt I'll be going for a sequel if they are planning for one!
