The Calm of Einaudi
Christine Rayner
2011 / Attuned Heart Recordings
63’14”

Christine Rayner’s "The Calm of Einaudi" is not only an exceptionally beautiful collection of fourteen of Ludovico Einaudi’s elegant piano solos, but it has the purpose of raising  money for cancer research and charities in the UK. A breast cancer survivor herself, Christine discovered Einaudi’s music in 2009 and marked the tenth anniversary of her recovery by performing series of solo piano recitals of Einaudi’s music in aid of cancer charities. With the success of these concerts came the encouragement to record her interpretations of Einaudi’s soothing and relaxing music. Sales from the album and downloads of the music have come from thirty countries to date, allowing Christine to support The Lymphoma Association (www.lymphomas.org.uk) and the Make-A-Wish Foundation UK (www.make-a-wish.org.uk) throughout 2013. I’ll get to the music itself in a moment, but I have to say that Christine’s website, www.braveamazons.com, is an inspiration itself. I wish I had known about it when I received my own 2009 diagnosis (although it probably didn’t exist then). She reaches out as an old friend you have never met, sharing her own experiences and offering solace in her words, music, and writings. I can’t recommend this site highly enough to those who are dealing with cancer as well as their partners and loved ones who are suffering with them.

For those who are unfamiliar with the music of Ludovico Einaudi, he is an Italian composer/pianist who trained at the Conservatorio Verdi in Milan under composer Luciano Berio in the early 1980s. He began his career as a classical composer and soon began incorporating other styles and genres, including pop, rock, world music, and folk music. He is especially popular and well-known in Italy and the UK and has released twenty-two recordings to date. He has also scored twenty-six films and television programs. His music is calm, graceful, and extraordinarily beautiful. His melodies tend to be on the simple side, requiring an emotional depth of expression to get their lovely messages across. Christine Rayner provides this to perfection.

On her website, Ms Rayner says of Einaudi’s music: “What I really like about his piano pieces is that they offer plenty of opportunity to include one's own style of interpretation and use of imagination. If one combines an accurate observation of the dynamics and other written indications, coupled with personal interpretation where appropriate, one cannot help but enjoy creating an experience of what I can only describe as transcendental beauty, fulfillment and spiritual upliftment; a haven of peace in this noisy and stressful world. I regard Ludovico Einaudi as a composer of a new, long-awaited style of classical music for the twenty-first century. His evocative melodies and harmonic patterns are employed within a flexible framework of classical form, embracing all the qualities one would expect to find in the music of a composer of Einaudi's standing in today's world.”

Each of the fourteen pieces is played lovingly and from the heart, providing a bit more than an hour of gorgeous solo piano music suitable for blissful focused listening as well as a wonderful backdrop for other quiet activities. Do your ears and your soul a favor while helping to raise much-needed funds to help eradicate this dreaded disease. It is available from Amazon.com and other Amazon sites around the world as well as iTunes. I give "The Calm of Einaudi" my highest recommendation.
