Before There Was Sex, Before There Was The City, There Was Just Carrie.

It's a name most women know. But none of us have known this Carrie before.
If you haven't watched Season 1 yet and are still planning to, I suggest you stop reading now. Spoilers abound!
I was too young to watch Sex and the City the first time it aired, but thanks to re-runs and the Internet I've been able to watch most of it now that I'm older and totally enjoy it, but I have to say that I actually like the Carrie Diaries more. Much more.
I really like Carrie's high school friends, and her sister, and her dad. I particularly like Walt and his struggles with being gay in the 80's, a time where homosexuality was less widely accepted than it is now. In particular the contrast between the acceptance he finds in New York to the fear of being found out in Connecticut really hits home how tough it can be to be different. And Larissa! It's hard not to simultaneously love her and hate her. She's so much fun, and a completely vibrant character. She's also the kind of person our parents warned us about when we were teens. The one that leads you astray and gets you into trouble.
The best part is, the canon is pretty well spot on, at least so far. The connections are starting to come through, Walt's kinds-sorta boyfriend Bennett is roomates with the ever fabulous Stanford and it has been revealed that Carrie will be meeting one of the three girls next season; personally I hope its Charlotte, but I imagine it will be Samantha.
I think this show is potentially better than the original, even if it is for different reasons. Anna-Sophia Robb is gorgeous as Carrie, and the 80's look so damn good on her. This is a different, more innocent Carrie, one who hasn't yet experienced the things that older Carrie has, this is before Mr. Big, before she was a famous writer, before, literally, the sex in Sex and the City. And this show is definitely worth a second look for both fans of the old show and newcomers to the scene.
