VERY old-fashioned, but useful if the right strategy is employed
Sep 24, 2010
In mid-March, 2010, my family visited Disneyland. My wife, 22 year old son, 17 year old daughter & I. So as time permits, I’ll be posting reviews on the various attractions. Bear in mind, I can’t really post CURRENT impressions of these attractions in regards to how well they work for little children. But I’ve certainly been to Disneyland a few other times over the decades.
ENCHANTED TIKI ROOM is very old-fashioned. You go into a large hut, made to look like some sort of Polynesian building. You sit on benches, and proceed to watch a show featuring primarily audioanimatronic birds. Lovely fake birds of all kinds, and also the flowers and the carved idols on the walls join in the fun. The patter between the 4 parrots hosting the show is full of bad puns and bad accents, and the songs are, I believe, the same as when Disney opened…so no modernization!
In the wrong frame of mind, this would be a pretty dull 17 minutes. Old songs, rudimentary animation and lame jokes. However, if you can enter this attraction in an open frame of mind, it’s a charming show.
But if you go, plan it correctly. For me, the best time to do this attraction would be in the middle of a hot day. Everyone is dragging a bit. Lunch is digested, and dinner is a couple of hours in the distance. Your legs are a little tired. When you go to the Tiki Room, the “lobby” area is outside the hut, but there are lots of places to sit, and it is well shaded. There isn’t really a line, per se. I’ve NEVER seen anyone having to wait more than the length of one show to get in. When we attended this last time, we had to wait about 11 minutes. During that time, I stood in line for a whipped Dole pineapple treat at the adjacent Dole hut.
You are allowed to bring food and beverages into the TIKI ROOM. So we took in our treats and enjoyed them with the show…which takes place in an air conditioned room!! And the walls are apparently thicker than they appear, because you get NO outside noise bleeding through. So you get a chance to take a 17 minute break from the heat, from the sensory assault that is a stroll through Disneyland and from wearing out your legs.
I’ll grant you, this attraction is not going to be at the top of anyone’s all-time favorite list. But it has survived decades of upgrades to the park, in part, I believe, because it offers that escape. And if you’re taking little ones to the park for the first time, I think it is essential that they see this slice of Disneyanna…one of the original attractions, and one that has changed very little over the years.
Disney World’s version of the Enchanted Tiki Room is currently under “New Management” and has been for some time. But the old Disney classic still comes to life with several birds who sing your favorite songs along with two Disney “stars” who bought the place. Zazu from The Lion King and Iago from Aladdin both “own” The Enchanted Tiki Room and you are there as they tell the birds of the new change. Although Zazu wants to keep the show the same, Iago has … more
