The Heat is the first buddy cop movie I have ever seen that features women. There are buddy cop flicks like the Lethal Weapon and Rush Hour films, but none of those of those films have the humor that The Heat does. The plot involves these two women trying to track down drug dealers. These characters don't like each other in the beginning, but they develop a respect for each other as the film goes on. Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy have excellent chemistry. One of my favorite scenes in the film is where Detective Mullins, played by Melissa McCarthy changes the wardrobe of Sandra's Bullock's character to help her fit in at a club. This is a hilarious scene where McCarthy rips off the sleeve of Bullock's blouse to make her look hip. There is another funny scene where the two female leads dancing with two old men in a bar. McCarthy does say the f word a lot in this movie. I cannot recommend this movie to people who have young children. Nonetheless, this is a funny adult comedy. It features the great classic tune like the funky hit "Fight The Power" by the Isley Brothers. It also contains a hip hop song about female empowerment entitled "Werking Girls". Bill Wither's classic "Lonely Town, Lonely Place" also gives this movie a groovy tone. The Heat is one of the funniest films of the summer.
On paper, this film must have sounded like a great idea...Super Uptight, friendless, socially awkward, FBI Agent has to partner with a foul mouth, crass, Boston cop in order to bring down a vicious drug lord... . Add Oscar winner, Sandra Bullock and Academy Award nominee, Melissa McCarthy to the mix, plus director, Paul Feig ('Bridesmaids') and you have a perfect female, 'buddy flick'. What could possibly go wrong? … more
