"Anyone would think the son of a bitch had done this before, I told myself. He never hesitates. Table, nails, hammer, kitchen chopper. He knows exactly what he needs and how to arrange it." Roald Dahl from The Man from the South. My name is Sam Sutlive and I have mentioned a couple of times that I like Roald Dahl’s short stories. In The Man from the South Carlos is the main character. He is Jamaican and is living in a hotel that is several miles away from his home. He likes betting and is a quick and efficient little man. There is an edge to the story because it builds up to the climax by making you ask if Carlos is going to win a bet for a finger. The intensity is built by an old Jamaican, an English girl, an American boy, and a tourist coming together. They do not know each other but have to accept the daunting reality that that the American boy may loose a finger. The intensity also increases throughout the story because the tourist and the English girl do not approve of the bet. The pacing of the story is slow, which increases a small feeling of dread that is felt by the reader. The Man from the South is similar to other Roald Dahl stories because it has that extra little twist at the end. It has the quirky character and the realization that a characters current reality is not as it seems. In Dip in the Pool one of the main characters thinks that he is talking to a regular woman. She ends up being mentally unstable. The main character does not know that no one will believe her. I think that one reason Roald Dahl was such a good writer was that he had several jobs in different countries. His family traveled to the same vacation site during most of his childhood. The Man from the South is a very good story. It has good imagery. You will like it if you enjoyed Roald Dahl's children's stories and his other short stories. If you have not read much of Roald Dahl you will like this story because it is suspenseful and puts you on the edge of your seat without being to scary or dark. Regards, Sam Sutlive
