A Maze to Ponder

  • Jan 1, 2014

This is a modern day retelling of sorts on Dante’s Inferno.  In both stories the protagonist is trapped and has to find his way to safety as he is tormented by demons.  In Brannon’s tale the lead character finds himself in this predicament after he has a near death experience. In his unconscious state he experiences his demons as he has to find his way out of the maze or die trying.

Brannon sets up the story well in the beginning showing the battle lines being prepared between the forces of good and evil. The characterization of the antagonist is well drawn out in his physical actions and inner delusions.  The story has some wonderful imagery in the fight scenes with a Minotaur.

The only part of the story where it falls short is the thought process of the lead character. There is a lot of repetition that doesn’t add anything to the tension of the story. This makes the story uneven and the plot plodding. He also tends to be a little heavy handed in his symbolism. For a more experienced writer, this could have been worked better.

All in all it is an interesting read and does give the reader something to ponder. It will be interesting to see how Brannon can grow and develop in his writing to create more complex and compelling storylines. For concept, I would rate it a 4 star.  For antagonist development a 4.5 star. However for the protagonist and his development and the overall storyline, I would rate it a 3.5 star.
