I was lucky to obtain a reviewer copy directly from the author and want to thank him. After all the controversy regarding The Da Vinci Code, I am wondering what the blow back will be from this book. After all that book only questioned the place of Mary Magdellin while this one questions the who Catholic Church.
Emily is an archeologist who finds a rare gold coin from the time of Augustus Ceaser. The coin minted years before Christ seems to bear a likeness of him with the thorny crown. This coin is 'priceless" and when Emily sends it to be cleaned and registered, it is stolen. Emily follows the thief to Rome and accidently meets Father Ryan who is also chasing a mystery.
A priest that was involved in some important research and his killer had come to Father Ryan to confess and give Father Ryan a message from the dying priest. When Father Ryan goes to investigate what was said, he is put in peril himself.
It turns out that what Emily is looking for and what Father Ryan is investigating are tied together and it appears that someone high in the church wants to silence them both. I really enjoyed this book as it made one question everything we have always been told. The author did incredible research to present what is in it and he does a fairly good job of developing Emily and Father Ryan's characters. I would have given the book a full five stars but the author failed to provide an appendix or afterword to explain what was "factual" in the book. If most of what he presents is fact than this book could be a blockbuster.
