The National

An excellent band based out of Brooklyn.

Musical fearlessness combines well with whip-smart lyrics and a baritone voice.

It's turning out to be impossible for me to get enough of The National or to grow tired of them. The lush, hooky arrangements, the lyrics that seem so gentle but cut like the sharpest of knives, and the gorgeous, velvety baritone [belonging to the unexpectedly gorgeous, velvety Matt Berninger -- seriously, Google Image him.] are a lethal combination. It's rare to find a band that delivers on all fronts, but this one does, and they don't stick to any one sound; sweet, beautiful shoegaze-y songs lead right into straight-up rock songs lead right into dusty-sounding compositions that, if one didn't know better, could possibly be referencing the Civil War. The National are dreamy and opiate-like, yet pointed and brainy. The best of all possible worlds. Check them out at www.americanmary.com.
