Last week, I fulfilled one of my most prolonged goals I've had: karaoke! My family loves singing along to their favorite tunes, and growing up, singing karaoke was like learning how to water the lawn and take out the trash. But throughout the years, karaoke lost its touch for me. Songs got old and crowds got boring. You know your family's karaoke/magic mic is outdated when The Backstreet Boys are the newest hit among the selections. I knew I needed a change. And that's where The Rhyme Along came and saved me!

This has got to be the most unique thing I've been to. Hip hop karaoke? Why haven't I heard of/done this before? My friend invited me along, telling me that I'll feel like a rap star for the first couple of minutes on stage. And I most certainly did. The setup is the same, you find the book and fill out a piece of paper. I thought it was pretty cool that you got to write in your own stage name. Once you give it to the DJ, you wait until your name is called. Pick a cool song, and pick many - or else you'll be waiting for a long time. Either way, if you're with friends you'll enjoy the company as well as the drink specials they have going on.

The best part about The Rhyme Along is how modern the songs are. From old school hip hop like A Tribe Called Quest to recent songs from Kanye's 808's and Heartbreaks, the selection is beyond enough. I saw this one girl sing Empire State of Mind by Jay-Z and Alicia Keys (and totally rocked it).  What's even cooler is a back up MC is on stage to help you along if you get lost or can't keep up. I sang Selfish by Slum Village and really felt like I was on tour.

I gave this whole gig a four only because of a few things. As fun as it was to sing along, it would have been more fun to be able to dance. Yes, I said it - dance! There is no dance floor, and while people still felt the need to groove along near the stage (including myself) - it did feel kind of awkward and cramped at the same time. The place is mostly set with tables, so be prepared to take a seat.

Also, I noticed most of the songs were rap. Which was totally fun for me. But getting in on some Usher or Musiq Soulchild would have made it a complete experience for hip hop fans - especially the people who actually ARE good at singing.

Other than that, I loved it! I had a blast, even though I only sang one song. I'm already thinking of who to make sure to bring with me next time. Let's go!
