I have been collecting records since the summer of 1965 which coincidentally is just about the time that The Rolling Stones were in Dublin, Ireland playing before a frenzied audience of teenagers at the Adelphi Theater. Down through the decades it has always been my contention that The Rolling Stones made their very best music during their days at London Records in the 1960's. So when offered the chance to take a look at the new box set from Abkco "The Rolling Stones: Charlie Is My Darling -- Ireland 1965" I jumped at it. This unique package features the long-forgotten 65 minute film by Peter Whitehead "Charley Is My Darling" which was recorded in its entirety during that marvelous summer weekend so many years ago. The footage has been lovingly restored and both DVD and Blu-ray versions are included. Also featured are two marvelous audio CD's, a 10" vinyl album, a colorful replica tour poster and an amazing 44 page hardcover book with sensational photos, newspaper clippings and the narrative of just went down that weekend. Trust me, if you are a fan of the band this one is a keeper!

For me the most surprising thing about this package was the film. Ordinarily, I am not a big fan of this sort of thing but I found "Charlie Is My Darling" to be quite entertaining indeed. It was fun watching the boys as they traverse the Irish countryside on a train enroute to their gig in Dublin. As you might expect Mick Jagger has some very interesting things to say and there are numerous opportunities for the other band members to chime in as well. It is amazing to me that even at this very early stage of their career how little privacy the guys have and they talk about that. There are interesting shots of the Irish countryside as the train chugs along and they are plenty of shots of the boys horsing around. Lots of fun! But clearly the best part of "Charlie Is My Darling" is the footage from the concert. The raw energy is simply unbelievable! See if you agree.

Now I would certainly concur with another reviewer who felt that the "two audio CD's are the real gem here". These discs are positively out of this world. Disc One is the soundtrack from the film and features "live" versions of such Rolling Stones classics as "Pain In My Heart", "The Last Time", "Time Is On My Side" and of course "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" which was riding high on the charts all over the world when the film was being made. Also feature in the soundtrack are the original studio recordings of "Heart of Stone" and "Play With Fire". Meanwhile, there are a number of other terrific tunes in this 22 song soundtrack. Among my favorites is the boys doing an impromptu version of an old London folk anthem "Maybe It's Because I'm A Londoner" which was a big hit in England in the late 1940's. The second audio disc "The Rolling Stones Live In England '65" features a bakers dozen of outstanding performances from the group's performances in their native land during that incredible year. There are some really interesting tunes on this one including the band's take on such diverse tunes as Willie Dixon's "Little Red Rooster", Hank Snow's "I'm Moving On" and of all things Bobby Troup's great jazz standard "Route 66". Who'da thunk it?

The bottom line here is that the "Charlie Is My Darling: Ireland 1965" box set is outstanding in every way. It is clear to me that a lot of thought and love went into producing this package. This is collection that can be enjoyed by fans of the band, collectors and general audiences alike. Furthermore, due to the historical significance of this box set I am quite sure that many of these will wind up in libraries as well. Very highly recommended!

I guess I would qualify as a frustrated writer. My work requires very little writing and so since 1999 I have been writing reviews on non-fiction books and anthology CD's on amazon.com. I never could … more
About this topic

ABKCO Films presents a brand new cut, meticulously restored and fully-realized version of this first-ever, legendary, but never released film. Shot during a quick tour of Ireland just weeks after (I Can t Get No) Satisfaction hit # 1 on the charts, The Rolling Stones Charlie is my Darling - Ireland 1965 is an intimate, behind-the-scenes diary of life on the road with the young Stones. It features the first professionally filmed concert performances of the band and documents the early frenzy of their fans and the riots the band s appearances inspired. The band is shown traveling through the Irish countryside by train; dashing from cabs to cramped, basement dressing rooms through screaming hordes of fans. Motel rooms host impromptu songwriting sessions and familiar classics are heard in their infancy as riff and lyric are united. Charlie is my Darling is the invaluable frame that captures the spark about to combust into The Greatest Rock and Roll Band in the World.

The Rolling Stones Charlie is my Darling - Ireland 1965 Super Deluxe Box Set includes both DVD and Blu-ray discs that incorporate the new 2012 version of the film as well as the director s cut and producer s cut, plus significant unseen additional performance and other footage shot in Dublin and Belfast in September of 1965, bonus content, two audio CDs, one of which is the film s soundtrack album and the other a compilation of 13 live recordings the band made over the course of their 1965 UK tour.
