A Fascinating Philosophical Treatise.

This is not a book about Satan. This is a book about you.
In this book, Anton LaVey does not mold himself into some Alleister Crowley-esque figure, but rather paints a picture of a radical new philosophy of self-interest. With dabblings of Randian Objectivism, a good sized chunk of no-holds-barred individualism, and some classicist Greco-Roman ideas of indulgence and epicureanism thrown in, LaVey speaks not from a place of hokey-pokey god-or-devil worship, but rather moreso as a philosopher. And what he has to say is fascinating, unique, and brutally individual.

The tone of the book seems to be slightly based off of religious texts in a lot of ways, to the point where one is potentially suspect that LaVey is wielding this tone in fact as a mocking of the very texts and dogmas which he so ardently criticizes. The book is well organized and put together, and his statements generally rest on firm logical ground, regardless of the biting and sardonic remarks Mr. LaVey so amusingly inserts. The introduction by current High Priest of the Church of Satan Peter H. Gilmore is illuminating and interesting, providing fascinating background on the life of LaVey and how it led him to the philosophy which he puts down in this book with such flair and panache.

Those who are naturally curious and open-minded will likely come to this book and find it fascinating food for thought. Some may agree with it and embark on a life path. Some may not think it for them and move on. But it is not be tossed to the side as some sort of rebel-without-a-cause contrarianism or black-magic handbook, for it is neither. Consider it, perhaps, an apt companion to Ayn Rand's The Fountainhead.

Now satanism has influenced and improved my life over  the past few years, which is a shock as I was born and raised a hard core christian.      The Satanic Bible gave me initial food for thought, and I learned and developed independently from there, both as a Satanist and as a general human being. I was first impressed with the opinions expressed in the Satanic Bible. This  was a book that examined society, and here, human nature is seen as natural, rather than "evil" …

Read the Bible and you will learn repentance, deny yourself and take care of the necessity of people (who wants to suffer?). Read the Satanic bible and learn to worship yourself and do for people just what reflects on your benefits (everybody seek for pleasure). Satan has the best weapon for our society, our ego. Read this book to make up your void. But remember, there will be an end and two paths.

It is an excellent read, but it falls short on many philosophical grounds. The moral concepts it presents are thought provoking, but inconsistent.

Love him or hate him, you have to give credit to Anton Szandor LaVey for exposing some of Christianity's hypocrisies.

Not to be confused for a religious text. While I don't share the author's philosophy or its political implications, it's an interesting read. Of course, if the title alone immediately repulses you - even though it's NOT about Satanic worship - then you probably won't like it, anyway.
