The story of Art by E.H. Gombrich is the best Art History book I've ever read, it reads like a passionate and fascinating thriller. It comes with colour photography of the major works  and it is simply pure Genius how he manages to keep one absolutely fascinated troughout the book.
I took some courses of Art History in University and I remember that even though the subject is Fascinating some writers seem to be able to reduce all the passion and thrills of good Art into boring lists of styles and dates but Gombrich makes it all absolutely thrilling.
Highly Recommended.

I agree with Paul! Well-said and well-written QT! Sounds like a great nonfiction read!

The essence of great non-fiction writing ... the ability to generate passion and excitement instead of lists and tedium. Well said!
