The Vampire Diaries - What Twilight wants to be when it grows up

I used to love Twilight. Now, I don't exactly hate it, but it certainly does not deseve its hype. Stephanie Meyer was simply in the right place at the right time... She had perfect Post Potter timing. I don't think anyone can accuse Stephanie Meyer of being a good writer. Having friends that despise Twilight with their entire being forced me to think more critically about what I was reading, and I soon realised that they were right, Breaking Dawn was a disaster.

So when the "Twihards" started screaming about how Meyer should sue the creators of the TV version of The Vampire Diaires for the similarities between the two, it made me almost fall off my chair from laughing so hard. The fact that The Vampire Diaries had been around for at least ten years, when some of these "Twihards" were barely a twinkle in their parents' eye, made them shut up real fast.

The Vampire Diaries, to be blunt, is everything Twilight wishes it could be. While Meyer tries to give Bella normal, teenage things to worry about, she doesn't once succeed. Everything revolves around Edward, whether Meyer meant it to or not, and all it does is make Bella whingey, annoying, and even detestable to some. Conversely to Bella, Elena has her own issues outside of the Vampire drama. Ex-boyfriend, friend issues, the death of her parents, being adopted. Yes, the Vampires are obviously a big part of the story, but they are so much more integrated into the story. the Vampires of The Vampire Diaries come across as real people with defined characterisation, not just these mysterious, beautiful creatures that don't seem to have been thought about much beyond that.

Admittedly, the series is different from the books, but both L.J Smith's original work and the TV series are brilliant in their own right, with great plot line, characters and characterisation, and suspense that actually follows through with the promised action, things in which Twilight is sincerely lacking.Tiwlight, A Saga? I think not.

For me, if it was a choice between the next two, potentially disasterous movies that are to be Breaking Dawn, and Season 2 of The Vampire Diaries, I know which one I'll be choosing... Definately Elena, Stefan and Damon over Bella, Edward and Jacob.

The Vampire Diaries: Season 2, Episode 2; Brave New World
The start of episode 2 of the second season of The Vampire Diaries continues from the end of episode 1 where we saw Katherine visit Caroline in hospital and smothers her and then leaves.   Caroline wakes up and is hungry..but hungry for what? She's hungry for blood! This is when Caroline starts to go through the transformation into a vampire - this is really well acted by Candice Acolla, as she portrays Caroline's struggle with what is normal …

About this topic

The Vampire Diaries is an American supernatural-fantasy horror television series, which premiered on The CW on September 10, 2009. It was originally filmed in Vancouver, but after filming the Season 1 Pilot episode, filming was relocated to Covington, Georgia and Monroe, Georgia, to take advantage of Georgia's more competitive tax incentives. The show is based on the book series of the same name by L. J. Smith.

The series currently airs in The CW's previous Smallville slot. The series is paired with Supernatural as part of a horror-themed night. On October 21, 2009, it was announced that The CW had given the series a full, 22-episode first season. Meanwhile, The Vampire Diaries is currently The CW's best performing show.

Forbes.com includes the series in a so-called "vampire craze" in entertainment, beginning with HBO's True Blood and the film Twilight, continuing with the film Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant, and the upcoming films New Moon and Daybreakers.
