The start of episode 2 of the second season of The Vampire Diaries continues from the end of episode 1 where we saw Katherine visit Caroline in hospital and smothers her and then leaves.
Caroline wakes up and is hungry..but hungry for what? She's hungry for blood! This is when Caroline starts to go through the transformation into a vampire - this is really well acted by Candice Acolla, as she portrays Caroline's struggle with what is normal to her (drinking blood is disgusting) and what she now desires. Gentle clues into her transformation show not only the desire for blood but the inability to be out in daylight and eventually the fangs and veins. She has yet to lose her reflection.
So its annual carnival time at Mystic Falls High School and Elena just wants everyone to act like normal high school students, telling Stefan that they are not going to mention the V word (lol) or the D word - so does that mean VD is ok?
Damon is visiting the Mayors widow Carol and she asks him to lead the council of elders. Whilst he is in the house he overhears Mason talking to Tyler about certain things that have been going on, like his anger, blackouts, amazing strength, and the like. Damon is still trying to work out what the Lockwood secret is and compels a boy to pick a fight with Tyler. It just happens to be the guy that Bonnie was flirting with at the carnival. The guy Damon has compelled has a fight with Tyler and Mason and Stefan sees that they are something else. the poor guy though, because as soon as that his done a desperate blood thirsty Caroline stumbles across him and his bloody nose. Caroline feeds on him and ends up killing him. Interestingly, Stefan smells the blood and is led to where Caroline is (earlier Damon told Elena and Stefan that Caroline is transforming into a Vampire), I wonder why Mason didn't smell the blood as I am sure dogs have a heightened sense of smell too. Anyway, Bonnie sees that Caroline is a vampire and flips and tries to burn Damon to death but Elena stops him. Damon also wants to kill Caroline as he doesn't believe she will be able to control her cravings. Elena begs him not to so he doesn't. I think my problem with the actress who plays bonnie is that her facial expression is usually one of two, in pain or conceited smugness. I would like to see better range as I imagine a powerful Witch to be confident, in control and not intimidated or easily scared. I guess because she is new to being a witch that it can be confusing but she went off for a while before and I vaguely remember that she found herself on that trip. She still comes across as a pain and unstable. I think that the witch should be the grounding force in all of this but instead it seems to be Elena (someone without supernatural powers who has no internal conflict with being a normal teenager). Anyway, Mason keeps asking about a moonstone that is a family heirloom passed down through generations of Lockwood. Tyler saw Mason's eyes change during the fight and Masons excuses for it have made him suspicious. Tyler finds the moonstone and keeps a hold of it for now.
Stefan has told Jeremy all of the ways to kill a vampire and he goes to the Salvatore's to kill Damon. When he gets there he tells Damon not to drink the whisky or open the front door and also shows him the stake he has made. He is really looking to Damon for advice because he is still that confused teenager just trying to work out who he is. Damon has in the past given Jeremy advice and I think he sees a lot of himself in him. Who knows if they will continue to be on talking terms.
The episode ends rather romantically as Stefan takes Elena to the top of the Ferris wheel to be kissed.
I have one question on my mind...................how long will Matt be the only one without a Supernatural affliction or the knowledge of everyone elses?
