Zombies Have Never Been This Delightful!

I’ve been actively collecting action figures and other general toys for the past three decades.  I don’t have what I’d call an immaculate collection, but I certainly have picked up some nice items – some that I’ve sold and netted some nice profit, but many, many more I have in boxes stored throughout the house.  As any good toy collector will tell you, we do it more so because of how it makes us feel – reliving our youth, as it were – than we do for any other reason, and I don’t consider myself any different than the next in that regard.
However unlike many others, there are a handful of toys I’ll buy each year entirely for the purpose of taking them out of the package and displaying them.  They’re toys, after all, and they deserve to be handled and jostled and wiggled about.  While I don’t open everything (I’m not THAT crazy), I do open more than I probably should, considering I’d hope to retire on some of the earnings from them one day.
But because I like to open things up, I tend to run out of what I call ‘desk display space’ very quickly.  Every piece has a time and place, so the smaller I can get something that serves up that warm-hearted inspiration I mentioned above then the better: when it’s small, I can fit more of them … and, right now, there’s nothing smaller than Chibis.  A few months back, I bought the entire collection of Justice League Chibis (please, please, oh please make more); and, on their website, I saw that a line of Chibis from AMC’s hit program, THE WALKING DEAD, were in the offing.
Well … they’re here!
I happened across a display of them in my area Target Store yesterday, so I bought my first of what will undoubtedly be several packs.  (I do buy them slowly – one package at a time – in order to preserve that feeling of Christmas morning joy of not knowing what I’m going to get.  There are three relatively distinct lines within the overall product group: (a) actual show characters; (b) those dreaded walkers; and (c) translucent (i.e. see-thru) walkers.  Buyers get one of each in every packet.
To be honest, I’m not exactly sure what purpose these translucent walkers serve.  It wasn’t but last year (or the year before) that STAR WARS had a doomed line of PODS – the tiniest action figures possibly ever molded out of plastic and sold in packs.  The line lasted through four releases (yes, I probably have all of those, too), and, despite the toys’ inability to strike gold with consumers, they were a very nice creation.  In their line, manufacturers introduced some translucent characters, and they actually represented holographic versions of those popular heroes or villains from the Star Wars universe.  But … translucent walkers?  I’m honestly not sure what purpose they serve other than the fact it is a kinda sorta neat way to highlight the ghastliness of some of these zombies.  Within the packet, buyers also get a checklist, and it promises that there are even some randomly inserted red translucent walkers (I suspect that’s clearly meant to invoke images of blood and so forth).  While I can understand that tint, I don’t see an awful lot of personal value in a basically ghost-like zombie.  (Not only is that ironic, I think it’s medically impossible.)
But I digress …
What matters most in any line is the quality of the figures, and these little tykes really are terrific.  For my tastes, they’re as terrific as the Justice League line!  In typical Chibi fashion, these figures have the signature big pupils along with the most noticeable features of the character immortalized all done up in wonderfully child-like fashion.  In short, they’re adorable!  And I can’t wait to have them all for display on the corner of my desk.
The first series will include such show favorites as Andrea, Daryl, the Governor, Merle, Rick, Carl, Michonne, Maggie, Hershel (got him!), and Glenn … along with twelve different walkers, their twelve translucent versions, and two (rare) blood red translucent walkers.  There’s a second series promised on the insert which shows several more figures, but most of them appear to be alternate versions of folks already available in the first line.  That isn’t a bad thing – heck, that’s what the entire Star Wars universe of action figures does, along with the Batman and Spider-man lines, too – and I’ll watch for those, too, when they hit the street.
HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION POSSIBLE.  These are outstanding!  These Chibis are exactly what any toy aficionado who happens to be a fan of THE WALKING DEAD (well, except for those mostly awful episodes from ‘the Farm’) should have to proudly display with any and all of their other collectibles.  At a retail price of around $4 a package, they’re affordable.  I encourage fans to pick theirs up while supplies last!
