THE X FILES Is Back In Top Form!

Fans of THE X FILES just can’t quite get a break.  20th Century Fox, I believe, owns the rights to the franchise – or maybe it shares them in some way with creator Chris Carter – or something like that.  From what little I know (from reading), there’s some bad blood between the two of them – Fox and Carter – that relates back in merchandising and/or broadcast fees or some other such issues; I thought much of that had been settled, but, as there’s no rush apparently to continue the program either theatrically or with some ‘The X Files: The Next Generation’ on television, I guess the best we can hope for is a comics incarnation.

IDW has answered the call, and, this month (June, 2013), they launched THE X FILES: SEASON 10 along with Carter’s participation in the story department.  For the time being, this’ll have to whet your appetites, kids, until the adults in the room can get their act together and bring Mulder and Scully together again for our mutual delight.

(NOTE: The following review will contain minor spoilers necessary solely for the discussion of plot and characters.  If you’re the kind of reader who prefers a review entirely spoiler-free, then this ain’t for you!  I’d encourage you to skip down to the last two paragraphs for my final assessment.  If, however, you’re accepting of a few modest hints at ‘things to come,’ then read on …)

At the end of the television program (in that somewhat regurgitated finale), they were lying in one another’s arms after finally besting the Cigarette Smoking Man.  At the conclusion of THE X FILES: I WANT TO BELIEVE movie, our intrepid heroes – Fox Mulder and Dana Scully – they were living together under assumed identities, and that’s mostly were this projected “Season 10” begins: under an alias of Mr. and Mrs. Blake, Scully is practicing medicine while Mulder whiles away his time at home penning his memoirs.  However, the sudden appearance of Deputy Director Walter Skinner proves a cause for alarm: it seems someone outside of the Federal Bureau of Investigation hacked the government’s mainframe, all with the intents and purposes of uncovering the personal information of anyone ever assigned to the X Files.  What do they want?  Skinner can’t imagine.  What will they do with the data?  No one knows …

… but this is only the first installment (of five, mentioned on the title page), so I’m guessing those of us who are ready, willing, and able to once again search for ‘the truth out there’ will be around to find out as IDW continues this title.  The story, written by Joe Harris and Chris Carter, feels like a TV episode (a terrific start) as this shadowy group finally tracks down Scully when there’s little she can do to defend herself.  Mulder, in the meantime, has raced off to find out what happened with Skinner after a curiously cryptic telephone call comes to an abrupt end.  It feels like the start of something terrific, and why wouldn’t it be?  With Chris Carter back in charge and with the appearance that the rogue investigators might have to be welcomed back into the Bureau for the purposes of this case, how can fans not be excited?

THE X FILES: SEASON 10: BELIEVER (PART 1 OF 5) is published by IDW Comics.  The story is written by Joe Harris with Chris Carter; the art is by Michael Walsh; the colors are by Jordie Bellaire; and the letters are by Robbie Robbie.  The issue bears the cover price of $3.99 … but I’d pay any price to see our two heroes back on-the-job investigating matters that don’t quite add up to conventional explanation.  Bravo, IDW!

HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION POSSIBLE.  Yes, I loved the TV program.  Yes, I loved both movies (to a certain degree).  Yes, I love Fox Mulder and Dana Scully.  What’s not to love about carrying on THE X FILES into its tenth probable season?  Pencil in the reality that even the show’s creator, Chris Carter, is involved, and I’m expected big things in store down the road.  Let’s hope he and IDW can deliver.
