"Three Comrades" novel by E.M. Remarque - worth reading
Jun 25, 2010
Let's start from the book's plot. This book is about three men: Otto, Robert and Lenz. They know each other practically all their life. They passed through the war together. And that makes their friendship even stronger.
At the beginning of the novel Robert, main hero, meets a very beautiful girl. Her name was Patricia. I think he fall in love with her at first sight but maybe he just didn’t understand this. :) I think Remarque wanted to show Pat like an ideal, a perfect example of women’s beauty. Although she was an educated person, she was very simple and easygoing. Pat was like a flower among her new friends.
When you start reading this book it seems that it is you who lives in Germany and Robert’s life becomes a part of your own. That is why I can’t help admiring E.M. Remarque’s talent – he portrayed life of those times in all its richness. The ending of the book is rather sad: two main heroes are dieing.
When I read this book for the first time I was almost crying. Pat’s death was rather predictable, but I couldn’t say the same about Lenz and it was rather unexpected for me. While reading, I became a part of the book, a part of the heroes’ life. And when Lenz died I felt that I lost one of my friends.
Some people may say that this novel has bad ending, but I don’t think so. My opinion, that E.M. Remarque wanted to say to us that real love and truthful friendship will live, even after death.
