This is the first auto GPS I have ever owned; not the first I have used but the first that was my very own to do with as I pleased. I have absolutely nothing to compare it with and am not by any stretch of the imagination or definition a "techie" type person. That being said:

This little unit does indeed come ready to use right out of the box. I plugged it in, turned it on and was ready to go. The first problem I encountered was that the instructions that came with the unit are almost nonexistent. I can normally figure things out on my own, and indeed eventually figure this GPS out after playing around with it for some time, but it certainly would have made my life easier had the company provided some instructions which were more detailed.

My wife and I do a lot of traveling, both locally and not so local. We have spent 50 years being completely lost. That is okay for the most part due to the fact that when we make long vacation type trips we never ever follow any type of agenda and avoid large highways and cities like they were poison; we are "blue highway" people all the way. We also attend many, many sporting events in a four state area following our grandsons.

First, this Tom Tom works great in finding football fields, colleges and gyms. We have found it most useful. Now that being said, in taking longer trips we are so erratic and change our plans almost on a hourly basis, we found the unit not all that helpful.

I do like the fact that you have constant updates of the maps available. The unit is attractive, easy to read and the voice directing you is quite clear. I have had some problem getting the thing to give me alternate routes when the first simply does not meet our needs.

Overall, we found the unit to be useful in a limited sort of way. I sort of agree with a number of other reviewers here in that this is probably an economical entry level unit for people like my wife and I. I do not feel it would be the best unit to use for professional drivers and drivers who a looking for very fast changes of information while traveling and for those that want and need a lot of the extra features many units seem to provide. Bottom line is that this unit works for us in what we use it for but I fully admit that we are not all that demanding.

I would probably give this product a higher star rating had it had a decent instruction book.

Great review, Don! Did you end up finding a better one? Or are you still using this? I don't have an in-dash navigation system and I don't mind getting lost once in a while, since I learn from it, but I think one of these would come in real handy for road trip, which I want to take soon. Thanks for sharing!

Hi devora: No, we are sticking with this one. It seems to met our needs. As for getting lost...some of the best times over the years we have had when traveling is when we were absolutely clueless as to where we were! Thanks for the kind words.
