TOURIST TRAP

This great Full Moon film from the late seventies is an over looked gem that never gets the credit it deserves. For a film that was rated PG or something like that it did not feel that way. As anyone who has read my stuff before knows I am a big Full Moon fan. With that said I can't believe it took me this long to go back and revisit his film. Stephen King himself even loves this film so at least some one agrees with me, right?

A group of friends are on a road trip hanging out and doing what all youngens do, just out looking for fun. At some point they get a flat tire and one of them heads off to find a solution. As time goes by some of their friends who were traveling in a different car arrive where they are. They all hop in a go looking for their buddy who went off on foot to find a tire. Their luck continues as this car breaks down near an old wax museum. They meet the man that owns it but he says the show hasn't been running since the highway was created. All seems well for them at first but this man seems a little too weird, as does his creations.

Now of course if you have not seen this then I am sure you will be thinking of "Wax Museum" one and two. This film is not like those flicks at all; in fact it is way more serious even with the PG rating. Now don't get me wrong I like both of those movies as well but this is a more serious flick. J. Larry Caroll and director David Schmoeller did a good job writing this flick making it believable. The tension mounts and the creepy factor is high.

Of course a lot of the praise should go Chuck Connors in the lead as creepy Museum owner Mr. Slausen. The dude is friendly and everything to these kids but even still he is a little on the creepy side. Any man who has all the wax people like he does. Of course the cast of young people play their parts perfectly, as if you didn't know that. This is a B movie that actually does not feel like one, the best kind. This is one of Full Moon's best movies which makes sense since it came out during the time when they really tried. If you get the chance or come across it I say pick it up.
