In July 2010, the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution affirming that everyone has the right to clean drinking water and proper sanitation.

Now I agree that clean water is a very important thing. Next to the air we breathe water is a life giver and it is terrible that an estimated 884 million people do not have access to safe drinking water, and over 2.6 billion people do not have access to proper sanitation systems. Current estimates related about 14000 deaths a day to the lack of clean water, mostly children.

But what will such a resolution accomplish?

Will it bring a better life to 884 million people?

Certainly not and in the end it might turn out as a meaningless but well intended gesture.

This does not mean that I am against clean water for everyone. I am all for it and free. It is just that I have little faith in a resolutions that lack implementation.

And it is said that WW3 will be about clean water in the developing world while it will be for parking space in the developed world...

Thanks for sharing this, Jokull! I did not hear this news, but this is great and those are some very interesting questions that you pose. This really makes me reevaluate my own life and be really grateful for the clean water I've always had. I really hope that they do find a way to realistically implement good filtration systems to the impoverished countries that they intended this for. They'll probably start out by handing out LifeStraws or something, but every little bit helps.

By the way, have you heard about PITCH: AFRICA? It's another fun idea: they're using a soccer field to harvest rainwater.
