United - Only OK

Pros: Safe
Reasonably Clean

Cons: Always wanted more money
Movie screen was broken - no movie for our section

The Bottom Line: Reasonably priced, safe and on time.  All good qualities but anything extra was at a cost!

My family flew to and from Honolulu from Los Angeles.  We flew economy and had 2 children under 5. I have detailed my experiences below:

The flight was large and a 777.  There were several options to upgrade our seating with more leg room at a price.  It was $49 extra to upgrade which we passed on. There was a cost of $15 each way for each first bag checked.  Additional bags were more expensive.

Loading onto the plane was the typical cattle call.  The plane itself was clean and no frills.  There was a large screen television in our section but it did not work.  This made watching any movie or entertainment impossible.  Not the end of the world, but come on!There were free earphones in the seat backs of every chair.  There were several radio stations to listen to if you plugged the jack into the seat rest.

The bathrooms were nearby and were clean but cramped (aren't all airlines bathrooms small?)  There was a changing table/station over the toilet which I used to change our 5 month old.

The plane seats were average and fairly clean.  The air pressure from the overhead nozzles was good and the air felt clean and not too recycled.  We had an early morning flight which is a good idea if you are strict about cleanliness. There is less odor from the bathrooms too.

The flight attendants were nice in a generic kind of way.  They went through the motions of safety and passed out our free drinks.  Lunches were available in a box and cost $9.  We chose the boxed lunch with cheese and crackers and grapes.  The lunch portion was smallish but adequate and fresh.

The flight itself was smooth and safe and the Captain came over the cockpit to point out that we were near the islands.  He did signal a few times during mild turbulence to fasten seatbelts.  Safety concern is alwasy appreciated.

So why the lackluster review if everything was OK?  It just felt average and maybe that's how airlines are today - going through the motions and hoping to stay in business.  We got there safely and on time so what more could a passenger want...right?

Here's what I would have liked - more seating space and legroom,  a television that worked, a movie guide that was up to date,  larger bathrooms, real meals instead of snack food, and an enthusiastic flight crew.  Is that asking too much?

For example, most flights have a bassinet they will offer customers who are flying with infants.  Not even offered here.  Most flights will offer a blanket or pillow - not here.  It seemed that they always wanted more money and were quick to have their credit card reader ready for extra revenue.  That irked me.

All in all - a decent and safe flight but nothing more.  Is it selfish to want more?

What I like about UA is not its old fleet nor its business lounges, rather, it is Mileage Plus, UA's official frequent flyer program. Here, and if you want to take advantage of it to the fullest, is where you are able to redeem tickets on Singapore Airline ever much easier than on Krisflyer, SQ's own program!

I love United. I have been on 25 flights since the start of last year, and I have had 3 pretty serious delays, but they were pretty good about it. I love their very extensive network to Europe and Asia, other than Latin America, United has a very solid network, and with the UA/CO merger, it will be an amazing network.

The feeling is like one is served by your very own grandma! That sounds horrible but it's the truth! UA has great freq flyers prog though.

Pros: I have the option of never using them again     Cons: delayed flight schedule, attendants, cancellations and chatting pilots     The Bottom Line: "Leck mich im Arsch"   ~ Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart     Once you realize you’ve been screwed, it’s too late to do anything about it. You are stranded, at their mercy, wherever and whenever they want. All you can do is collectively sigh with your fellow companions and swear …
